As a testimony to the car’s rigidity, there is only a minute amount of scuttle-shake, with the top down, on uneven surfaces.

The 2.4i has a maximum output of 170PS (just under 168 bhp) at 6,000rpm and the torque peaks at 230Nm at 4,400rpm. With the 5-speed, manual transmission, it takes 9.1 seconds to get form 0-62mph and the top speed is 137mph.

Economical driving will get you somewhere near the published fuel consumption figures of 21.9mpg and 42.2mpg for the urban and extra-urban cycles. The combined works out as 31.4mpg and for every kilometre travelled the exhaust emits 215 grams of CO2, which puts it in VED Band F.

Sensitive driving is always easier if you have a target to beat and the C70 has one in the form of a range gauge. The trick is to set off on a journey, no matter how long and see if you can extend the range or a least slow the rate of consumption, without causing a problem to other road users. It’s a good exercise and seems to make the miles go faster.

Speaking of miles, those of the motorway variety are driven with quiet, comfortable ease. Even with the top down, the wind noise wasn’t enough to have me reaching for the volume control on the audio system and I didn’t feel the need to unpack and install the wind-blocker.

On country lanes, the C70 takes on a sporty air and proved to be very smooth, agile and flat on bends and flicking through the gearbox is a delight. As a testimony to the car’s rigidity, there is only a minute amount of scuttle-shake, with the top down, on uneven surfaces.

All of the trim levels have Dynamic Stability Traction Control or DSTC along with the usual ABS with EBD and EBA. Driver and front passenger have dual-stage airbags to go with the SIPS airbags and door-mounted inflatable curtains that are said to be a world first.

Should it all go wrong, the Roll-Over Protection System (ROPS) triggers the metal hoops hidden behind the rear headrests. Together with the strengthened ‘A’ pillars that run all the way down to the sills, the hoops form a protective cage, while WHIPS or Whiplash Protection System moves the seat to reduce neck injuries.

Car manufacturers are under pressure to produce cleaner, healthier, environmentally-friendly vehicles and as you’d expect, Volvo takes this seriously with its ‘Clean inside and out’ ethos. In short it is a range of filters and systems to limit the nasty niffs, particles and pollutants at the same time an optional PremAir treated radiator converts up to 60 per cent of ground level ozone to oxygen. Moreover, even the upholstery and metal trims comply with the Oeku-Tex standard in the reduction of allergens and metal leakage.

I think the words that sum up the Volvo C70 are solidity, style and a sporty nature and in my opinion it is well worth a look.
