Review

Joining the revised Volvo C30 range. a remodeled convertible has also joined the Swedish brand#8217;s 2010 lineup this week: introducing the 2010 Volvo C70.

With all-new frontal styling, designed to bring a family face to the brand, the revised Volvo C70 convertible also sports a new look rear and interior upgrades for a more exclusive, more dramatic impact.

Like the Volvo C30. the revised C70 also features upswept headlamps, that now reach elegantly into the upper section of the front guards, complimenting the larger air intakes in the remodelled front bumper bar.

At the rear, C70 features new LED tail lamps, and a new, re-profiled bumper bar to give C70 a wider, cleaner appearance.

#8220;What we have done is to carefully redesign the front and rear so they harmonise more with both today#8217;s and tomorrow#8217;s Volvo models,#8221; explains Volvo#8217;s Exterior Chief Designer, Fedde Talsma.

#8220;We have also increased the exclusiveness of the materials and trim details to enhance the atmosphere of luxury and enjoyment inside the car.#8221;

Retaining all the familiar luxury appointments, the C70#8242;s cabin has been slightly tweaked to enhance its premium look and feel.

Among the revisions are a wider, more sleek instrument cluster, while on the dashboard, the panel surface features a new texture to improves tactility. The new instrument panel also appears more elegant than before, while still being simple to read and thoughtful in its ease of use.

Aluminium trim details have been upgraded throughout the cabin with a new honeycomb surface that adds depth and further resists scratching.

Again, similar to C30, the C70 also features a new, optional grey/white Oyster Burst trim for the centre stack which is inspired by the classic Swedish Hagstrom guitars made famous by the likes of Presley, Zappa and Hendrix. The new trim can also be optioned on the door panel inlays.

#8220;There is even better detail finish to make driving a more pleasurable experience than ever before,#8221; said Mr Talsma.

For greater comfort, C70#8242;s seating has been reupholstered in softer leather. A new Cranberry Red upholstery option joining the extensive list of trim colour choices. The C70 can comfortably seat four adult passengers.

Wind protection is aided by a removable mesh shield that can be installed across the rear seats when not in use.

Under the bonnet, the C70 features two engine choices according to model grade. The Volvo C70 S offers a 2.4-litre five-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine that delivers 125kW of power and 230Nm of torque. It can be mated to either a five-speed manual or five-speed Geartronic automatic transmission.

For a little more pep, the upper-spec Volvo C70 T5 is fitted with a 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that punches out a healthy 169kw of power and 320Nm of torque. The C70 T5 is offered with the choice of six-speed manual or five-speed Geartronic automatic transmission.

Automatic models attract no price premium over manual models.

When it comes to options, the C70 is available with a single option pack, known as the Teknik Pack, in addition to the wide ranging list of individual options and accessories.

Like all Volvos, safety is a core quality of the C70. The car specifically engineered to be one of the safest convertibles on the market.

Included in the C70#8242;s extensive list of standard safety features are dual-stage front airbags, front-side airbags, door-mounted curtain airbags #8212; which were a world first for Volvo #8212; plus ESP with Traction Control and ABS brakes with EBA and EBD.

WHIPS Whiplash Protection System in offered in the front seats while all passengers are protected by SIPS Side Impact Protection System and ROPS Roll-Over Protection System.

ROPS is located behind the rear seats, the system deploys steel rollover bars (as well as the curtain airbags and seatbelt pretensioners) in the event of a rollover accident.

Similar to the C30, the revised C70 also includes Volvo’s Emergency Brake Light (EBL) system. Active at speeds over 60km/h, EBL pulses the brake lights at a rate of five times per second if the brakes are applied forcefully, such as during an emergency stop. Once the vehicle’s speed is reduced to 10km/h, the brake lights stop flashing and the hazard lights are activated.

The hazard lights can then be manually deactivated, or will cancel themselves once the vehicle speed again reaches 10km/h.

The C70#8242;s folding roof transforms the car from a stylish convertible to a classy coupe in just 30 seconds. The three-part steel roof controlled at the press of a button.
