When Volvo 480 became defunct, the Swedish auto giant was looking forward to come back with a3-door small car and when Volvo C30 debuted in the market, it came with high expectations. The car is mainly aimed at youngsters or people with nuclear families and bears some relation to the discontinued S40 sedan and V50 wagon. The vehicle was first exhibited in the form of concept and five years later, its production version was rolled out.

The three door sporty coupe comes packed in the form of petrol and diesel engines. Volvo C30 range starts with 1.6L D4162T turbocharged diesel engine generating 115PS and 270Nm of torque . The second in line comes with a slight change in the emission (114g/km as against 94g/km of the base variant) of the diesel engine giving same power/torque.

The top end diesel model comes with D5004TS diesel engine churning out power and torque of 150PS/350Nm.On the other hand, petrol engine model range begins with a B4204S3 engine producing 145PS and 185Nm of torque. The top end petrol variant is fitted with B5254T7 engine under the hood producing 230PS and 320Nm of peak torque. The diesel and petrol engines are coupled with an option of five and six speed manual and five speed automatic (Geartronic) transmission systems.

As far as sprint time is concerned, it can reach 60mph from standstill in just 6.4 seconds. The estimated EPA guidelines states that one can easily get around 19mpg/28mpg in city and highway respectively. In the year 2012, Volvo also introduced an electric variant of the car which is quite popular. The electric C30 is powered by 82 kW electric motor with a 24 kWh lithium-ion battery which can easily give up to 110km in one go.

It also comes with an optional range extender to further boost the car by up to 1000kms.

Volvo C30 has been getting decent cosmetic changes right from the day of its launch. The hatchback’s side profiling is sleek and squat with uniquely designed-sheet metal. The car boasts of some retro-futuristic design which is distinctive in its class. Exteriors are color coordinated with unique grille and 18 inch alloy wheels adding sportiness to T5 R-Design.

Volvo C30 is fair enough to charm the onlookers with its bespoked bumpers, deep cut arch moldings, smooth side skirts and tailpipe slipping into the cabin. High end models include features like LED daytime running lights, xenon headlamps and power sunroof.

Volvo C30 is designed bearing in mind the everyday drivability and comfort of a person. Suspensions are tuned firmly. The interiors are chic and modern with lots of options. It comes with standard floating center console adding more interest to the vehicle.

The center stack holds sounds system controls and those for the climate control. The honeycomb design and simple aluminum trim inlays makes it unique in its class.The front seats offers ample amount of room with the backseats offering enough scope for an average person. Cargo space comes handy with foldable back seats giving extra feet of room providing flexibility for friends and groceries at the same time.

The base version comes with features like USB and Bluetooth connectivity, a trip computer system and other standard features like power windows, air conditioning and adjustable tilt steering wheel. The state of the art music system includes 160 Watt speakers and Dynaudio sound system. Top models consist of features like driver seat memory and sophisticated navigation system.

The Swedish automaker has a longstanding reputation for providing range of top-notch occupant protection and safety equipments. The latest model includes features like electronic stability control, cruise control, front and side passenger airbags and side-curtain airbags with rollover sensors. There is an inbuilt Intelligent Driver Information System keeping constant watch on the driving,lane departure warning system and rear-obstacle detection system comes in optional equipment category.
