Volvo 340

Advantages: reliable, comfortable

Disadvantages: dull, some parts

Ahh, my first car. As this will be a horribly opinion, but bear with me, I try to be objective!

I bought this car in when I was 19. I needed something would be cheap to insure, but never been a fan of small so my choice was rather limited. I rear-wheel drive too, so a it had to be, really.

Plus even then you could get a really one for my Ј1,000 budget.

I bought a 340DL three-door, in hearing-aid of all colours, for Ј1,050. That like a lot of money, but the car had had one owner new and had travelled just 36,000 There was a full Volvo history from new right to the purchase invoice.

No radio had ever been and it even had the protective cover on the vanity mirror in the sunvisor. was no rust and the spare wheel the bonnet!) had never been

For the next 18 months the car ferried me to each Sunday night, back to my supermarket job each morning. Of course, I used the car for all of things in between, so I clocked up an 1,000 miles a month. have a deserved reputation for (more on that later) and it impressed me how tight and solid it

It was quite heavy on fuel for a (due to the high-ish weight and the #39;box) but ran on unleaded happily.

The were the most comfortable I ever sat in, even seven later (and I#39;ve had a variety of motors, too). The was terribly heavy but the gearchange was a The handling was OK in the dry, but more fun in the wet it didn#39;t really have power to induce oversteer in the

Back seat room was not too although be warned, when the seats tilt forward lean in towards the centre of the car this is quite normal, at I thought the seats were

So what went wrong? nothing to start with. One

day a plug fell out on the M4. I joined the AA that. It went into a village garage for a service the day. About two months I was in Kent and the car started running rough with a distinct of power.

The AA man did a compression test and was no compression on no.3 cylinder. I looked for a garage locally, a really dodgy one (the one free at the time), and bit my fingernails. it was only a broken pushrod it was due to the village garage overtightening the cover when they did the

I never used them that. Otherwise it was only the consumables, but notably a new brake cylinder and radiator were at one point.

Then one day there was a noise from the left-hand of the car on corners. The car had sat for a while before I it and the front suspension strut filled with water.

One had through. The local garage Ј950+VAT to sort it out. looked grim, until my dad a knowledgeable friend with compressors and a torque wrench helping us do the job ourselves.

Two secondhand struts (Ј50), two new absorbers (Ј80) and a couple of saw the job done.

The car drew a lot of favourable due to it#39;s fantastic condition there was no rust anywhere. I up the looks a bit by finding someone scrapping a 360GLT and bought the wheels. The wider tyres even more grip less fun).

All good must end, and one day in the summer of my then-girlfriend lost control and hit a The impact was at about 15-20mph while we were fine, the car the impact square-on, bending the valance, bumper, grille and bonnet edge. A quote the local bodyshop of Ј1,000+VAT write the car off, and my fledgling bonus would bite the so I sold the car to my mechanic for Ј200 as it He bought the necessary part

s from a scrapyard, did the fitting and and sold the car to another local who uses it today.

These old tend to be slated by the motoring but a looked-after one makes a lot more than a last-legs Escort or for the same money.
