Volkswagen Phaeton

According to industry insiders, the Phaeton had to meet the needs of the lead engineer before the car could be sent to the plant to build a prototype. The limo-styled car had to drive well under all conditions and meet Volkswagen’s strict standards in terms of precision and comfort as well.

Volkswagen Phaeton Origins

Few carmakers have acquired quite the fame and attention of the German Volkswagen company. Like so many of the other automotive manufacturers, this company had its start in the first half of the 1900s. Also like so many of the others, Volkswagen experienced some hard times.

Needless to say, it had some rough going as an automotive plant in Nazi-controlled Germany during World War II. The company found its purpose diverted as the government took over and insisted the plant produce armaments instead of cars.

The end of the war marked a new beginning for the German car manufacturer. The company could finally go back to making what its name translates to, the people’s car. A short time later, Volkswagen got back in business, creating such famous names as the Beetle and other designs.

While the company has experienced ups and downs like all the others, it has consistently provided worthwhile options in the automotive world. The Phaeton provides another example of the company’s excellent design and engineering abilities.

About the Volkswagen Phaeton

While not necessarily the most well-known of the Volkswagen family of cars, the Phaeton is known in certain circles for its full-size sedan design and amazing good looks. VW creates this car in answer to the other luxury sedans offered by other European carmakers, such as BMW and Mercedes. Volkswagen looks to provide the market with a more affordable option, while keeping up appearances in terms of excellent German styling and engineering.

Sales have not met the automaker’s expectations, but for those who have tried the Phaeton, reviews have been good.

Original plans for the Phaeton instruct the car to have one of the longest wheel bases currently on the market, and certainly the longest one VW offers. This feature alone helps to ensure space in the car and provides the driver and the passengers with plenty of space to stretch out and enjoy the ride.

Volkswagen Phaeton Features

For the 2012 model year, Volkswagen presents the Phaeton again with some tweaks to the body style and powertrain. The exterior of the car measures a bit wider than in previous years and the front grille has been updated as well. Instead of the traditional black on the front, the grille features an attractive chrome accent. This year’s model also features a choice of two wheelbase lengths.

Buyers can order the Phaeton with their choice of back seat designs as well. Depending on the trim level, VW has designed the Phaeton with four engine choices.

As Volkswagen’s luxury sedan model, the Phaeton focuses on comfort and luxury inside the cabin. Many prospective buyers show interest in what sits under the hood. The lower trim levels come equipped with a six-cylinder engine capable of 176 hp. The choices go up from there with eight- and twelve-cylinder motor options as well.

The final engine choice offered on the 2012 Phaeton is the V-6. Volkswagen offers both a gasoline V-6 engine and a diesel V-6 option on this model.

Volkswagen Phaeton Evolution

The Volkswagen Phaeton has yet to become an old car line for the German carmaker, but the few models that have hit the market impress enough. These cars intend to make an impact on the world’s market, and while the car has yet to sell as well in the U.S. market as first forecast, it causes industry leaders to turn their heads. This car earns recognition for its versatile powertrain options, roomy cabin, and elegant body style.

The relatively new model design has been consistently updated in Volkswagen’s attempts to work the bugs out of the model.

Past versions of the Volkswagen Phaeton feature a choice of wheel sizes. VW offers 17-, 18-, and 19-inch alloy wheels. Some only come on certain trim levels.

Consumers can also expect amazing powertrains and plenty of choices in engine types. The direct injection V-6 engine offers improved fuel economy over some of the competitors’ motor choices.

For the 2009 model year, Volkswagen offers several new colors for the exterior as well as the interior of the model. Consumers have several choices for color schemes to customize their Phaetons. The car’s interior has been designed and built to provide plenty of comfort and luxury.
