Volkswagen Golf

The Volkswagen Golf has been around since 1974 and is now in its seventh series. It has a justified reputation for being reliable, well built and desirable, the latest Golf is evolution personified, it retains the distinctive Golf look but subtle changes make this the biggest and best Golf yet. The extra 56mm in length and 13mm in width are used to excellent effect, up front the driver and passenger have increased legroom and are separated by an extra 31mm.

Rear passengers have extra leg and shoulder room and Volkswagen have even managed to increase the boot by 30 litres. The latest Golf is 100kg lighter making it better to drive and more economical. The Ford Focus is still the best handling car in this class, the Hyundai i30 is the best value and the Alfa Romeo Giulietta better looking but the Golf makes for the perfect all-rounder.

The Volkswagen Golf is delightfully laid out inside and very well equipped, even the entry level #8216;S#8217; trim enjoys CMS (Composition Media System) a 5.8#8243; touchscreen control system with bluetooth for your smartphone that enables you to make phone calls and stream music, a DAB radio is standard as is an electronic handbrake, electric front windows, manual air conditioning and electric heated door mirrors, the SE, which is the pick if funds can stretch, adds award winning comfort seats with lumbar support, rear electric windows, alloy wheels, cruise control, automatic lights and wipers and a host of safety features including automatic braking to avoid a collision and a driver alert system that will sound an alarm if the car feels you are becoming tired.

The engines are all excellent and all have stop-start to improve fuel economy, the engine stops when you do and restarts once you touch the accelerator, scary at first but you quickly get used to it, the two petrol engines are 1.2 litres (with 88 or 105bhp, the more powerful one is better) that offers over 55 miles per gallon but it is the 1.4 litre petrol that is the pick, offering 122 brake horse power that will get you to 62 mph in 9.3 seconds and to a top speed of 126 miles per hour, it has excellent economy of 54.3 mpg. The two diesel units are 1.6 litre 105bhp and the 2.0 litre 150bhp, both are quiet and smooth and offer an excellent blend of power and economy, 74.3 mpg for the smaller diesel.  The Excellent DSG automatic gearbox is available across the range of engines and has minimal effect on power or economy.

The New Volkswagen Golf may not turn the heads of pedestrians as you drive by but it is a truly wonderful car.
