Volkswagen Golf GTI named Car of the 2013

KUALA LUMPUR: The Car of the Year award was grabbed by the Volkswagen GTI at the New Straits Times-Maybank Car of the Year 2013 Awards tonight.

The car also took home the Car of the Year’ award, having the most votes from the judges panel for its unrivalled dynamic handling, refinement and quality.

Besides the Golf double win, Volkswagen also swept the Premium Car of the Year award for its Volkswagen MK VII and the Premium SUV of the Year award for the Touareg TDI signalling that power is becoming more for its torque capability.

The COTY 2013 Award is the first motoring award, was launched in 2002 by Cars, Trucks, the motoring section of the New Times, as a platform of acknowledge within the motoring industry. The was endorsed by the Malaysian Automotive

The Minister of International Trade and Datuk Seri Mustapa was present at the event along the New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd Tan Sri Datuk Seri Mohamed Hassan and Malayan Bank Bhd head community financial Malaysia, Hamirullah Boorhan.

The ‘Automotive Man of the Year’ award was to Bermaz Motor Sdn Bhd managing Datuk Ben Yeoh for his achievements in the Mazda brand in Malaysia.

Motor is a unit of Berjaya and the exclusive distributor of Mazda in the country.

Meanwhile, Honda bagged double category in COTY 2013 award the locally assembled and competitively Honda Jazz (CKD) the hotly contested Compact Car of the award and the Honda Accord clinching the Executive Car of the Year

Proton Holdings Bhd also won two with its top selling sedan, Saga SV bagged the Entry Compact Car of the Year award. Its Suprima S also won the ‘2013 Choice’ award.

Some of the awards include ‘Premium Car of the Year’ award which was by Porshe Cayman S. The Lexus IS 250 F took the honours in the Premium Car of the Year (below RM500,000) while the Jaguar XJ 2.0 swept the Executive Car (above RM500,000)

The Premium Compact Car of the Year was to Mercedes Benz  A250 Hyundai Veloster was voted as the Level Coupe of the Year.

Kia Serato won the Family Car of the Year. In the truck category, the Isuzu 2.5 Auto topped the list the MPV of the Year award went to Stavic.

The winners were from 65 new or extensively facelifted that were introduced to the market between October and October 2013, and divided 15 categories.
