The Volkswagen Caddy is not new to the market, having been on the global market for many decades, having debuted the global market in the year 1982, following its release in the year 1980. It comes as a light commercial vehicle which does well for what it was designed for. It is a product of the Germany car maker Volkswagen Group, produced for the local market by Volkswagen South Africa.

Since its introduction up to 1984, Volkswagen unveiled two diesel options and six petrol variants. The engines provided by Volkswagen were the 1.0 petrol, 1.3 petrol, 1.5 petrol, 1.5 diesel which was provided on the debutant model in 1980; and the 1.6 petrol, 1.7 petrol, 1.6 diesel with turbo function and the 1.8 petrol all provide globally on various markets.

The base 1.6i Trendline engine does 75kW at 5600 rpm, with a carbon emission ratio of 195g/km and a favorable fuel consumption of 8.2 liters per 100km.

The braking system features disc brakes on the front and rear, with the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), Traction Control System (TCS) and Engine Drag Torque Control (MSR) forming the basis of the solidity and stability of the Volkswagen Caddy.
