Below are a sample of used SMART CITY-COUPE cars for sale, please use the search filter to refine your results and find the car of your dreams.

Smart builds cars that are incredibly cool, surprisingly affordable and built for city living. The Smart Fortwo Coupe perfectly represents this particular ethos, although when it first landed in 2000 it’s safe to say that people were a little taken aback by its dinky form factor.

The fact that the same bloke who designed the McLaren F1 was also responsible for this urban run around caused further surprise, although today we’ve grown to love the funky fun that is offered by the City-Coupe.

Although the Smart City-Coupe has been with us since the turn of the millennium, it was actually being shown off as early as 1996 and had a somewhat troubled birth as a result of industry wrangling.

We didn’t get it in the UK until it was in its fourth generation, with the fifth arriving in 2001, but that meant that it was more refined and capable than ever.

Some confusing name changes meant that the approved used Smart City-Coupe was renamed in 2004, becoming the Fortwo Coupe in the UK. But these early, pre-change models are still just as appealing to those looking to pick one up on the used market.

Be aware that if you’re buying a City-Coupe built during this early period, you might well find that it is an import with left hand drive, because right hand drive models did not arrive until 2002.

This isn’t a problem as such, but it is something that you need to keep in mind as you start your search.

Bang for your buck

With the Smart City-Coupe, what you see is what you get and the name really says it all. This is a two seater city car that is less than three metres long and just a metre and a half wide.

This small size means that luggage room is limited and bigger passengers might find themselves squeezed. However, on the plus side you can wedge it into virtually any parking space and even park head-on to the curb, which you may see some owners doing from time to time when the gap is particularly tight.

On the outside you get removable body panels, reminiscent of the interchangeable covers on old Nokia phones, which help to make the car look stylish and unique as well as giving you an easy way to erase any aesthetic damage that it might receive.

Although it is small, the City-Coupe is quite safe, with twin airbags, ABS and plenty of crumple zones keeping you as well protected as possible in a car the size of a shoebox.

While it may not have the biggest boot, you can pull out the passenger seat or fold it flat to get more room for those bigger loads.

What you’ll pay

When it comes to price, the Smart range is always incredibly resilient to depreciation. Even after more than 10 years on the market you’ll pay the best part of £2000 for a decent City-Coupe.

On the plus side you can pretty much guarantee that it’ll have low mileage, since this is a car for people who don’t really need to use a car all that often. In addition the tiny engines mean that insurance group 2 is all you’ll have to worry about.

What to check

Quite a famous issue with early Smart models relates to the rear window, which can shatter with surprising force in certain situations, mostly to do with the heat applied to it by the built-in element that’s supposed to help clear your view.

Most should have been replaced by now, but always check to see whether or not this work has been carried out, because it could be an added expense down the line.

There can also be issues with leaky seals on the windows and problematic electronics, so look out for any service work and prior repairs when buying a used example.

The clutch will cost £165 to replace, with affordable front brake pads setting you back just £25. Although the used Smart City-Coupe for sale can hold its value, it’s quite cheap to maintain.

How it drives

If you want fashionable city motoring that’s also cheap to run and only sips at petrol, then the used Smart City-Coupe is a good buy.

Not everyone will love its styling and the newer models make early editions look a little lacking, but in its intended environment the City-Coupe is hard to beat.
