The Rover 25 was first released in the UK in 1999 and production ceased in 2005 as Rover, sadly, became no more.

The original range was large and not a little confusing. There were two body styles, one diesel engine, four petrol engines and five trim levels. L, E and Base trims were offered with the 8-valve 1.4i engine, S and L trims with the 16-valve 1.4i and 1.6 litre units and S, L and E trims were offered with the turbodiesel 2.0 litre engine.

All models were available with either five or three doors, even the sporty 1.8 GTi.

The range underwent a fairly minor facelift in 2004 which included stylistic improvements, improved security measures and tweaks to the pedal positioning, steering and brakes. At the same time, the choice of trims became the SXi, SEi, Si and i.

In 2005, shortly before Rover went bust, even more trim levels were added with the introduction of the GXi, GSi and GLi badges.

Bang for your buck

The approved used Rover 25 range’s engines have improved fuel-efficiency compared to its predecessor, the Rover 200. The 16-valve 1.4 litre engine is particularly efficient and most of the Rover 25s sold had this engine. The best performance in terms of acceleration, if not top speed, comes from the turbodiesel 2.0 litre model.

The interior is a classy, quality affair and features a rake-adjustable three-spoke steering wheel complete with audio control and a 45 litre airbag. Most models have a height-adjustable driver’s seat. There is just about room for three in the back but it’s pretty cosy back there.

Boot room is impressive for a car now firmly positioned in the supermini category.

All models have a nice wooden trim in the cabin and there was a good selection of alloys offered with new cars. ABS was standard on all 1.8 and 1.6 litre models.

What you’ll pay

Used Rover 25 cars for sale aren’t yet that common on the second hand market but numbers are rising. A 1.4i three-door model from 1999 (that’s a V-plate) will set you back around £1625 and the more commonly found 1.4iL around £1700. A 2000 W-plate 1.6iS model is around £1800. Diesel-engined models start at approximately £1725 for a 1999 V-plated 2.0TD with the iE trim.

Another £300 will secure the iL trim.

Insurance groups for the used Rover 25 go from group 4 to group 7 for the main models but jump to Group 14 for all GTi versions.

What to check

The Rover 25 has no known recurrent failings and tends to have been bought, in the most part, by older customers (with the exception of the GTi), so used 25s tend to have been looked after. As ever, a full service history is desirable.

Most replacement parts are reasonably priced and readily available. A full clutch assembly will be around £95 and a replacement exhaust system (with catalytic converter) about £485. A new headlamp should be close to £80 and a radiator £115.

Front brake pads are £55 and rears £50. A starter motor is £140 and a replacement alternator £175.

These prices are based on the second hand Rover 25 1.4E but prices should be broadly similar across the range.

How it drives

The used Rover 25 for sale is one of the more impressive cars in the supermini arena. The well-planted ride and firm steering give it a solid, grounded feel and the K-series engine just begs to be revved without ever being too loud for comfort (with the exception of the GTi, which is suitably noisy).

Gear changing is smooth in all models and the handling compliant and safe without ever being too boring. The most popular 16-valve 1.4 model will reach sixty miles per hour in 9.5 seconds en route to its maximum speed of 115mph. The GTi gets to sixty in just 7.8 seconds and will reach a top speed of 124mph.

The turbodiesel 2.0 litre models also reach sixty in less than 10 seconds.

The repositioning of the Rover 25 as a supermini was one of the best moves Rover ever made. It no longer had to compete with the VW Golf and its cronies and was able to stand out from the crowd at last. Used 25s are available at knockdown prices and come highly recommended.
