Background

The Peugeot 206 was launched in the UK in 1998 with a choice of four engines: 1.6, 1.4 and 1.1 litre petrol units and a 1.9 litre diesel option. The trim levels were known as L, LX and GLX and there was also a sportier 3-door XS trim available with the 1.6 litre model.

1999 saw the introduction of the plush Roland Garros model which had a glass roof, leather trim and a 1.4 litre engine with the option of automatic or manual transmission. Later in the same year a 2.0 litre GTi version came out and the manual Roland Garros was fitted with a 1.6 litre engine. A new turbo diesel HDi model also appeared.

In 2000, a limited edition flagship GT model was released. 2001 saw the release of the Peugeot 206 Coupé Cabrio with its foldable hard top. Several other variations were released and tweaks made to the range until 2004 when the trim levels were separated into Sports and Classic ranges.

Classic comprised the Style, SE and S whereas Sports was made up of GTi, XSi HDi and Quiksilver. Also in 2004, Peugeot released the GTi HDi model. As the release of the 207 loomed, the range was trimmed to the Urban, Sport, Verve and GTi only and then slimmed right down to just the Look trim.

Bang for your buck

The used Peugeot 206 for sale combines Volkswagen build quality, the handling of a Ford and Vauxhall’s value and is a good all-round supermini.

Inside, the interior feels solid and long-lasting. There’s not a lot of legroom in the back but the boot is pretty spacious for a car of this size.

The second hand Peugeot 206 looks pretty good on the outside, the only real gripes with its design are that the rear doors are pretty small and the low tailgate means that its top is visible in the interior mirror.

What you’ll pay

S-plated 1.1 litre L 3-door used Peugeot 206 cars for sale are available for around £1200 but are fairly hard to find. More common are T and V-plated examples priced at £1250 to £1500. You should add around £300 for five-door models and £400 for cars with the LX trim. The 1.4 litre models start at around £1245 for a 1998 LX.

Again, you will need to find an extra £300 for 5-door models and an extra £600 for the GLX trim.

1.6 litre models kick off at around £1800 for the 3-door only XS trim but just around £100 extra should bag a 5-door only GLX trim. Normally aspirated diesel 1.9 litre examples start off at around £1575 for the LD form (3-door versions only) and an extra £1000 is enough for the plusher LX trim. A further £300 gets all five doors.

1.4 HDI diesel cars start at £2775 for a 51-plated Style. If you are looking for a bit more power, the 2 litre petrol 206 GTi ranges in price from £2075 to £3,125 and the 2.0 litre HDi diesel version that arrived in 2000 starts at £2125.

What to check

None of the Peugeot 206‘s engines have any known recurrent faults although the Blaupunkt stereo fitted in early Roland Garros, GLX and GTi models has been known to play up and some of the plastic interior has been known to peel off after a few years. If you are looking at a GTi model pay special attention during your test drive as they are more likely to have been driven hard.

Parts

Replacement parts are reasonably priced and readily available, a clutch is only around £100 for example. Rear brake shoes are around £37, front brakepads about £35, a full exhaust system will set you back about £265 and a replacement starter motor around £100. A new alternator will be around £145 and a headlamp £60.

These prices are based on a 1.4 litre used Peugeot 206 and exclude VAT. Prices will be broadly similar across the range.

How it drives

The slickness of changing gear and the excellent suspension are class-leading and the handling is reasonable if not mind-blowing. The drive isn’t great fun (except in the GTi), there is a little too much body roll and the power steering is overly light, but the traction is excellent.

None of the 8V engines offered are fast or refined. The 1.4, for example, takes 13.2 seconds to reach 60 miles per hour and has a top speed of 106, but they are all very fuel-efficient. A sensible driver can expect about 43 miles per gallon from an average used Peugeot 206.
