A history lesson.

The Citroen C2 was first released in the UK in September 2003 as a sporty, youth-oriented car designed to fill the considerable hole left by the demise of the hugely successful Saxo model. The original new C2 range featured a budget 1.1 litre model, 1.4 litre petrol and diesel versions and a VTR sports model which, with its 1.6 litre engine and paddle-shift gear change, proved to be a big hit.

In December of the same year the Citroen C2 GT was introduced which was similar to the VTR but without the sequential paddle-shift gearbox. Summer 2004 saw the release of the hugely popular VTS model which featured 130 bhp and a very attractive insurance group. In 2005 Citroen launched the 1.4HDi Furio and in 2006 the innovative C2 Stop Start became available, this model automatically switches the engine off when the car in stationary and starts it when it’s time to go.

The VTS HDi was released as the top of the range Citroen C2 in 2007.

The used Citroen C2 was restyled in 2008 and a variety of new features added, such as lateral air bags and MP3 CD capability. The range was simplified to four choices of trim, the Vibe, the Rhythm, the VTR and the VTS.

Bang for your buck

All models of Citroen C2 cars for sale are distinctive and stylish and the range maximises the available space very well and will comfortably seat four passengers. The quality of interior materials used is a big improvement on those used in the C3 and the split tailgate eases loading when parked in a tight spot. All in all the used Citroen C2 doesn’t pretend to be anything more than it is, a good-looking well made car with room for two in the back.

What you’ll pay

A basic 1.1 litre second-hand Citroen C2 from 2003 will set you back around £3175 but unless you’re really hard up it’s best to go for a 1.4 litre at least. The 1.4 Furio starts at about £3725. Diesels are well worth a look and kick off at £4025. The most common sportier model around is the VTR, starting at £3875.

Used C2 VTS models are rarely available and an 04 plate weighs in around £5000.

What to check

Citroen C2 engines are known to be particularly reliable so there shouldn’t be any major issues there. The digital dashboard has been known to have a few issues so this is worth checking over but is usually an easy fix. Apart from that, it’s just a matter of checking for the usual signs of wear and tear that an urban scoot will pick up.

Replacement parts are reasonably priced and readily available, a clutch is around £110 for instance and an exhaust system is around £325.

How it drives

Generally speaking, all models of used Citroen C2 cars handle well and are fun to drive. The 1.4 litre petrol with sensodrive gearbox is a particularly smooth ride. If economy is your priority, the 1.4 HDi models will appeal to you and comes highly recommended.

However, if you are looking for something a little more sporty then the GT or VTR should be your first port of call. Gradually more and more VTS models should enter the market and these are probably the best buy in the range for fun and power.
