About Chimaera

Although production may have ceased back in 2003, the TVR Chimaera is arguably the most iconic vehicle ever to come out of this UK based operation. The very first model rolled off the production lines back in 1992 and its popularity was assured from that very moment.

The vehicle has classic sports car styling which belies a more powerful, four litre engine than others in its class. It has other mechanical features that made it a beast on the road but one of the most interesting aspects of the vehicle’s history concerns its name.

Chimaera was derived from the Greek ‘Chimera’ a mythical beast which was made from parts taken from many other animals. TVR’s creation certainly wasn’t a monster to look at but several of its components were taken from elsewhere. The car uses the very same backbone chassis as the TVR Griffith while its engine derives mainly from a Rover V8.

Although its powerful V8 engine gave it an impressive set of performance data, the TVR Chimaera was designed to be the company’s grand tourer. It had a softer suspension than the Griffith and was therefore far better for taking on longer journeys rather than brief but speedy trips.

The other key differences with the Chimaera lay in the dimensions which saw greater length as well as more capacity inside. This was certainly a more comfortable ride but while it was useful as a tourer, many viewed the new arrival purely as a luxury sports car.

Some variants on the 4.0 litre engine arrived and in time, the car could be supplied in four different sizes right up to a supremely powerful 5 litre version. With the 4.0 litre engine, the Chimaera could achieve 0-60 in 5.1 seconds and it had a top speed of 152 miles per hour. In contrast, the 5.0 litre version could hit 0-60 in 4.1 seconds and its top speed was measured at 175 miles per hour.

As far as cost was concerned, the 4.0 litre Chimaera was the entry level vehicle and at the height of its fame in the early 2000’s a new one would set you back a little over Р€30,000. It was, however, a big seller and one of the most popular models of the entire TVR range.

As with all cars produced by this stable, looks and attention to detail were also huge selling points and the interior benefitted from classic styling.

Traditional wood panelling met with sharp, aluminium details and controls that only added to the overall driving experience.

For many TVR lovers, this improved on the Griffith while others had mixed feelings. The engine was indeed powerful but the longer body helped to make the acceleration steadier. In short, the company had achieved their aim to build a tourer that was fun to drive.

The last TVR Chimaera left the factory in 2003 and the model was replaced by the Tamora. However, the market in used models remains a healthy one and this will always be a true British classic in every sense of the word.
