1978 Through 1982

This was the first generation of the Tercel. It was available as a two-door or four-door hatchback or sedan and was officially named the Toyota Corolla Tercel. The base level Tercel came with a 1.5-liter single-overhead-cam (SOHC) engine that produced 60 horsepower at 4,500 rpm and 75 foot-pounds of torque at 2,400 rpm.

The higher-end models produced two additional hp and one additional foot-pound of torque. The Tercel was designed to be a gas saver, as it got 36 mpg in the city and 48 mpg on the highway with a four-speed manual transmission. It dropped to 29 mpg city and 36 mpg highway in an automatic.

It was 161.2 inches long, 61.0 inches in width, 52.6 inches tall and had a 98.4-inch wheelbase. Depending on options, the Corolla Tercel weighed 1,900 to 1,955 pounds.

1987 Through 1990

The third generation saw some major changes, both mechanically and cosmetically. The engine’s horsepower was bumped up to 78 hp at 6,000 rpm and 87 foot pounds of torque at 3,800 rpm, by changing the engine to three valves per cylinder. The wagon stayed the same, though, at 62 hp. The fuel economy was 23 to 25 mpg in the city and 28 to 31 mpg on the highway, depending on the options.

The Tercel sedan was 157.3 inches in length, 64.0 inches wide, 52.6 to 52.8 inches high and had a 93.7-inch wheelbase. The Tercel wagon was 170 inches in length, 63.6-inches wide, 56 to 57-inches high and 95.7-inch wheelbase.

1991 Through 1994

In 1991, the Tercel had another makeover of the body, with some slight mechanical upgrades. The 1.5-liter engine was pushed up to 82 hp and 90 foot-pounds of torque. The fuel economy was 26 to 33 mpg in the city and 29 to 37 mpg on the highway, depending on the year and options selected. This generation of the Tercel is 161.8 inches long, 64.8 inches wide, 53.1 to 53.2 inches high and has a wheelbase of 93.7 inches.

The curb weight, or empty weight, of this generation is 1,950 to 2,085 pounds, depending on the options.
