Toyota Tercel History

The Tercel (United States)

The Tercel was Toyota’s entry level vehicle during the 80’s and 90’s. The Tercel was slotted below the Corolla, and was meant to offer basic affordable transportation while introducing young people to the Toyota brand. The Tercel was redesigned several times over its twenty year run. The Tercel was produced in two and four door sedan, wagon, and hatchback versions.

By 1991, only the two and four sedans were offered. 1999 was the last year the Tercel was produced; rising sticker prices versus the anemic mechanical offerings desimated Tercel sales in the U.S. The Tercel was replaced by the Echo in 2000.

The Tercel (Europe Japan)

The Toyota Tercel is a vehicle created by Toyota starting in 1987. The Toyota Corsa, a related model, comes in two styles which are:

(a) The saloon

(b) The hatchback

(a) The saloon is the Toyota Tercel – nicknamed JoinUs and comes both in a Japanese and European Version

(b) The hatchback is the Toyota Corolla II – nicknamed Windy and comes only in a Japanese Version

Both models (normally) come in a Turbo Charged 1.5Ltr Diesel Engine although European customers of the Tercel could choose their engine specification when purchasing it from a Toyota Agent.

The Toyota Corolla II is a distinct model from the Toyota Corolla although the latest European Corolla has a hatchback version which is based upon the Japanese Corolla II. In fact some people also refer to this European model as a Corolla II leaving the saloon version as the traditional Corolla.

The Toyota Tercel is said to be the inspiring model to the Toyota Platz ( or Toyota Echo )

Usually the interiors of the Tercel and Corolla II are identical in a progressive manner for example the Tercel ’97 version has an identical interior to the Corolla II ’97 while the Tercel ’98/’99 has an idenitical interior to the Corolla II ’98/’99 although the latest European Corolla HatchBack is not identical to the Platz/Ist ( the interior of the latter being identical to the Vitz/Yaris ).

The Tercel and Corolla II also share a very similar interior to the Toyota Starlet (nicknames reflet) or Toyota Glanza.

The features of the latest Japanese Corolla II ( YEAR ’98/’99) Windy include:

(a) 1.5Ltr Turbo Diesel Engine;

(b) ABS – Anti-Lock Braking System;

(c) Passenger and Driver Airbag;

(d) Air Conditioner;

(e) Rear Head Rests; **

(f) Cup Holders;

(g) Radio;

(h) Clear Indicator Lights; **

(i) Silver Design between two rear lamps; **

(Double Stars) imply that this feature is not available in the YEAR 1997 model

There is also the Windy G package which includes all of the above plus the followig features:
