Toyota iQ

If this is small cars are headed, me a convert.

Model Tested:

Toyota iQ3; 1.3-litre, petrol; CVT automatic; three-door #8211; $21,560*

By Matt Tokyo, Japan.

This may be the first steer of the smallest car yet driven, but my 20 minutes behind the was enough to tell me that if is where light cars are then consider me a convert.

Toyota#8217;s MegaWeb complex in I was treated to a short steer of the iQ3 around the facility#8217;s in-house track.

The 2km track (which I a number of times) is designed to be representative of Tokyo#8217;s city featuring a number of scenarios closely simulate a city and, as such, is a small of short straights, tight and varied surfaces aimed to prospective local buyers a for the car#8217;s abilities in its intended

The iQ name, hinting at the car#8217;s design, has an #8220;i#8221; to represent innovation and intelligence, while the stands for quality #8211; a of the Toyota name. It seems media were equally of the iQ when naming the Car of the Year for

A compact yet remarkably well design, iQ draws an uncanny of space from its minimal At just 2985mm long by wide and 1500mm high, the iQ can house three adults and a of items of luggage or, alternatively, two and two small children.

Admittedly the rear seat is a bit with an … up back passenger seat slides to accommodate) but for short distances or use it#8217;s ideal, especially if the primary role was as a two-seater.

and egress is easy enough, and for its small proportions, leg and headroom are suitably #8211; and surprisingly ample.

iQ#8217;s design is to emphasise four key traits: low consumption, maneuverability, environmental and maximised interior space.

design team have these traits by giving the iQ overhangs (wheelbase is only a windscreen that is pushed forward on the body, a asymmetric (sans glovebox), a flat tank (mounted beneath the slimmer seat design, heater and air conditioning unit and rear-angled shock absorbers.

Powered by a choice of 1.0-litre or petrol engines, or, in European a 1.4-litre diesel, the iQ caters for a mix of markets chasing differing of performance and economy.

With the market fitting the former performance, I thought it best to the reigns of the Toyota Yaris 1.3-litre, four-cylinder petrol iQ to see what#8217;s on offer.

As you#8217;d no expect of a car weighing 955 kilograms, but 72kW on board, performance is sprightly, even if we were to be limited to 40km/h on our test.

Acceleration is brisk, and very thanks to a CVT transmission, with iQ a lot faster underfoot than its 0-100km/h time of 11.8

The car is stable thanks to it#8217;s track and, comparatively long wheelbase further cornering feel as well as the of lumps and bumps.

The electric steering is blissfully light, but not of feel, and, at the risk of crucified here, feels sporty in tackling the mid-course

Stopping power is confident iQ#8217;s disc/drum combination in four-wheel disc in some offering ABS with brake and electronic brake-force distribution as

The safety theme is continued iQ with nine airbags front, dual side, curtain, front passenger cushion, driver#8217;s knee and window curtain) offered as as well as optional ESC with Control.

Like I said, it was a short drive over a unchallenging and slow course but the feel and impressive performance of sub-light hatch matched good looks and clever emphasises the fact that need not be all bad.

Toyota have no plans to bring the generation iQ to Australia.

* Pricing is an as converted from Yen to AUD based on the retail price of a Toyota iQ3 CVT (as tested).
