Toyota Highlander Canada

The SUV crossover Toyota Highlander has been manufactured by Toyota since 2000; it made its debut at the New York Auto Show and arrived at the dealerships in Canada in January 2001. The Highlander was Toyota#39;s first crossover built on a car platform, sharing the Toyota Camry platform which was later used for the Toyota Sienna minivan and Lexus RX, designed as a more compact version of the Toyota 4Runner.

The Toyota Highlander was the best selling SUV or CUV (crossover utility vehicle) by Toyota until 2006 when it was outsold by the third generation Toyota RAV4 .

Toyota Highlander 2001-2007

The Toyota Highlander was available in 5 and 7 passenger seat versions, with a 2.4L DOHC, VVT-i engine with 155HP, shared with the Toyota Corolla and crossover Matrix. and a larger V6 3.0L, DOHC engine with 220HP, with standard front-wheel drive and optional AWD, competing directly with the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and Jeep Grand Cherokee in Canada, while the V6 engine AWD version with Nissan Murano and Honda Pilot .

In 2006 the Highlander arrived to Canada as the Highlander V6, 4-wheel drive version only; the Toyota Highlander received 5 stars crash rating from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) for frontal driver and passenger crash along with side passenger and driver crash tests. While the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) rated the Highlander as the second lowest fatality rate vehicle after the Toyota 4Runner .

Toyota Highlander 2008-present

The second generation Highlander was unveiled in 2007 at the Chicago Auto Show, along with the Highlander hybrid; the five seat Highlander was replaced by the Toyota Venza in Canada and United States with only the 7-passenger version assembled at the Toyota manufacturing plant in Princeton, Indiana.

The 2012 Toyota Highlander in Canada is equipped with a 2.7L DOHC, 4-cylinder, 16-valve engine with 187HP or 3.5L DOHC 24-valve V6 engine, with 270HP; and includes standard anti-lock brakes with brake assist, enhanced electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) and vehicle stability control (VSC), while Downhill Assist Control (DAC) is standard on the Highlander AWD models. The Highlander in Canada is available in three trim models, besides the Highlander hybrid; the Highlander, Highlander 4WD V6 and Highlander 4WD V6 Limited. All trim models include front and back MacPherson strut suspension, stabilizer bar and anti-vibration sub-frame.

Toyota Highlander Hybrid

The Highlander hybrid was the first seven passenger hybrid, opening the door to higher fuel efficiency and larger vehicles. While the hybrid drive-terrain made its debut at the North American International Auto Show in 2004, the Highlander hybrid arrived in Canada in 2007 with a revolutionized technology developed by Toyota; Hybrid Synergy Drive which replaced the original Toyota Hybrid System which was used in the first Toyota Prius.

Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD) is also used in the Toyota Camry hybrid. Prius along with the Lexus CT, Lexus RX 400h and Lexus HS hybrid models.

The HSD system used in the 2012 Highlander hybrid combines a 3.5L, V6 engine, with a high efficiency high-speed electric motor and an electronically controlled variable transmission (CVT). Like the gasoline only powered Highlander the hybrid model include front and back MacPherson strut suspension, stabilizer bar and anti-vibration sub-frame. While torque varies depending on the battery state and demand on vehicle it has an impressive 280 horsepower.

The 2011 Toyota Highlander hybrid in Canada is available in two trim models; Highlander 4WD-i which includes leather seats, push button start, heated seats and sunroof, and the Highlander 4WD-i Limited including 19-inch wheels, a premium JLB audio system with XM satellite radio.
