So it goes with the automobile. If no one set the standard for others to achieve, we would all be driving boxes with wheels and searching for Justin Bieber songs on a tinny-sounding AM radio. But ladies and gentlemen our automobile world is safe; Lexus has introduced the 2013 LS460 luxury sedan and in doing so the standard has been set.

It wasn’t long ago that Lexus suffered a blow in sales. Thanks to an earthquake followed by a tsunami in Japan, the manufacturer had trouble and in 2011 for the first time in over a decade they were not the best selling luxury brand in America. They began to recover however and last year regained their top ranking. Almost as if to say ‘thank you’, Lexus retooled the LS line and gave us the LS460.

Adding a little icing on an otherwise perfect cake for 2013, Lexus added the F-Sport model to the LS460 line. And it’s actually like icing with some tasty sprinkles.

There’s a reason Lexus was the top selling luxury sedan in America for so long and probably will be again; because they know how to do it right. The attention to detail is flawless and with a reputation for quality preceding them there’s good reason that a loyal following will not even shop another brand.

We recently spent a week behind the wheel of the 2013 LS460 F-Sport and it can be easily summed up, it was pure joy. Not only do we get the reengineered platform of the LS460, the F-Sport adds even more focus on the driver with more power (386 horsepower out of the V8 as opposed to the 380 in the base model), More torque (367 ft at 4100 rpm versus 247 in the base model), a lower more aggressive stance, a revised air suspension system, three driving modes and an eight-speed sequential-shift automatic Electronically Controlled Transmission with paddle shifters and downshift rev-matching.

All this is in addition to all the other features on the standard LS; a 12.5 inch multi-function screen, a ten speaker premium sound system, rain sensing wipers and a GPS linked analog clock to name just a few.

We tried to find something, anything, we didn’t like about this car, we really did, but in the end failed. Aggressive cornering is no problem, 0-60 in 5.3 seconds, check, quiet cabin, check, smooth ride, check. And while the extra 6 horses didn’t seem to make much of a difference, the engineers have tuned the sound of the engine to produce a dull throaty put-a-smile-on-your-face roar under hard acceleration.

The interior of the F-Sport uses brushed metal in place of the wood trim in the other LS models adding to the impression that while luxury is first and foremost, it’s okay to let loose once in awhile.

By the third day we gave up trying to find anything to criticize and simply enjoyed the drive. And that’s what it’s all about. The Lexus LS460 is an enjoyable drive, add the F-Sport and it’s an enjoyable drive with a mild dose of steroids.

Lexus has again shown why it was once the leader in the luxury sedan market and with the addition of the F-Sport it’s now a whole lot more fun. With the BMW 7 series in the midst of a refresh and new Mercedes S-class on the horizon, Lexus has set the bar for other luxury sedans to reach for; if the new LS460 series is any indication that standard has been set very high indeed.
