It does kind of strange, on the face of it, to a hybrid vehicle as a performance but that#8217;s exactly what did at this year#8217;s Canadian Car of the competition. Instead of slotting the new GS450h into a luxury-car (its price, indeed, have qualified it for the $75,000-and-up car category), the company instead to pit its top-of-the-line midsizer against opposition as the 8,200-rpm Audi the BMW M Coupe and the Ford Shelby

With its whisper-quiet drivetrain and leather interior, the GS450h is any of those cars, but there is no that it#8217;s a performance It is, indeed, the quickest version of the GS you can buy #8211; a hybrid sedan also the performance and price of its line-up. Powered by a 3.5-litre V6 by electric power driving the wheels, the 450h flies.

gasoline-powered engines, which to rev to produce power, electric produce full torque the they start spinning, the GS electrifying acceleration off the line. On the digging into the gas pedal is switching on a turbocharger as the engine needle swings up (there is no and the pictogram in speedometer shows flowing from both

It may be but at least initially, the GS450h really feel like a car. That#8217;s largely we#8217;re used to a lot of noise and from fast cars as climb up to high speeds. in this Lexus, hard is accompanied by eerie silence, some of the thrill.

You quickly get to it as the quiet cabin just it easier to enjoy the excellent Levinson sound system with 6-disc CD changer and yes, your eyes do not you #8211; a tape player at the of the centre stack!

What#8217;s up the tape player? a friend of asked. Isn#8217;t this car to be high-tech?

Rest assured that it is. The 450h comes only one with every gadget in substantial songbook. A central flanked by eight round summons up not only the audio but the controls for your Bluetooth-connected phone, a DVD-based navigation the dual-zone automatic climate address book, calendar, camera and car set-up.

Thanks to the screen, all of the functions are pretty to use, but I do wish that the for them was a bit more consistent. For the radio controls show six presets in three rows of labelled each with a and the name of the station; switch to the CD (which you have to do with an set of buttons down near the player) and you get your CDs laid out in of you #8211; in two rows of three!

given all of the gadgets Lexus has in the 450h #8211; and its desire to a clean cabin ambiance all those controls #8211; you to understand why the German manufacturers in are exploring centralized turn-and-click Even with the touch the GS#8217; cabin is full of and controls that could be into a set of menus; a flip-down to the left of the steering wheel contains almost twenty to control everything from the mirrors to the instrument dimming to the release. Get into a BMW 5 series or A6 after driving a GS and you understand while their integrated systems are far from perfect, are at least a step in the right

You do, of get used to it all #8211; as you do with And the cabin is at least constructed Lexus#8217; typically fastidious to detail.

Even upholstered in dull grey leather, my red interior was beautifully finished, top-quality materials throughout. was impeccable, too: with invisible panel gaps and no or rattles. More importantly, the cabin is roomy #8211; it a half-size bigger than similarly priced German and offers excellent rear

One tall passenger, however, did about limited headroom to the sweeping roofline in front.

only when you get to the trunk you really notice #8211; for the unique alloy wheels their chrome centre and the tiny hybrid badges on the #8211; that the 450h is any from any other GSs. To put it the trunk is small: it#8217;s as as the regular GS trunk (which was already smaller than an A6 or 5-series) but only about as deep thanks to the presence (in the wall) of the electrical system. If you on using the 450h for long or to carry a lot of luggage, you#8217;d make sure all your will fit.

Long trips of course, what this car at. The ride is glassy-smooth unless you up the jiggly sport setting on the (which is activated by a switch on the console). The cabin is whisper-quiet at continent-crushing speeds.

Thanks to the ministrations of the hybrid the GS#8217;s range is excellent for a powerful luxury car: not did I manage just over 10 km in a week worth of mostly driving, but the fuel tank#8217;s easily eclipsed 500 km.

Find on a more challenging road your typical superhighway and the GS well, but isn#8217;t really involving. The steering has a synthetic, of video-game feel to it: indeed, to electric power assistance, the Vehicle Dynamics Integrated (VDIM) system can actually steering corrections when sliding.

Grip from the Dunlop tires is excellent, but the feels heavier through than its German competitors, as as more conventional GS models, aren#8217;t carrying the extra of the battery and electric system. As for the stops are short, but feel can be inconsistent, depending on how much the hybrid system wants to as you slow down. Overall, the is impressive, but not as involving as, say, a BMW.

Then again, for people at a 450h, the fact that not a 5-series is certainly going to be of its attraction. Thanks to its distinctive and decidedly futuristic drivetrain, is a car for people who want something than the default choice something more technically and something that delivers a different experience. The 450h all of that and more.

Its engineering which not only gives you of toys to play with but also plays a role in its fuel consumption and emissions makes it the technophile#8217;s choice in a competitive luxury-car set. who choose it will be more happy to overlook a few foibles in to drive the highest-tech thing on block.
