Subaru Creates a #8220;B9#8221; SUV

By Jim

Subaru has jumped into the SUV market with both offering a terrific new vehicle at least as nice to drive as any SUV I#8217;ve tried.

Subaru has marketing its Forester as an SUV for several now, but I#8217;ve always it more of a tall wagon an honest to goodness SUV. And fine! I#8217;ve always the Forester, and prefer it to most along with the old Mazda 5 it has been one of my favorite such though the Subaru has had the advantage of the traditional all wheel drive.

But is trumpeting the B9 Tribeca as the real SUV though they#8217;re calling it a Utility Vehicle#8221;. And it does a little like a cross an SUV and a minivan, without the minivan#8217;s sliding side doors. It like a cross between a and an SUV, too, and while may sound like the B9 Tribeca has a personality, it drives very regardless of what you want to to call it.

My wife, who is a confirmed #8220;Subaruphile,#8221; liked the B9 Tribeca #8211; as did I. In I only had two problems with it, one of is superficial and disappears when you sit the wheel and the other of which rears its ugly head you#8217;re behind the wheel. on that later.

The 2006 B9 which is apparently based on the and very nice Legacy, is comfortable, flexible and fully It#8217;s powered by Subaru#8217;s boxer engine, in which the liters worth of cylinders each other out to the tune of 250 @ 6600 rpm and 219 lb-ft of torque @ This is plenty of get up and go, and the it allows the B9 to reach highway speeds as quickly as you#8217;d need to if you racing a Porsche from a light (and who in his right would do that in an SUV?)

The is smooth and refined and likes to This means it hums comfortably at highway speeds, enough power to pass and almost sporty while it.

Subaru claims the Tribeca, the model I drove for a will go from standstill to 60 mph in 8.5 though I never timed it. A passenger model is also with a small third row back#8221; that would be for occasional use or for relatively small

The vehicle comes with a smooth five-speed automatic but while it#8217;s fine the … is one of my two negative points the vehicle. While upshifts are fine, I thought the transmission was slow when you goose the gas and it to downshift #8211; for passing or plain fun. I didn#8217;t this as much in #8220;normal#8221; conditions, but it was apparent when I to put the spurs to her.

It wasn#8217;t to turn me off the vehicle, though.

Outside, the B9 Tribeca is very tech-looking, with an attractive body that looks up to date. But this is where my #8220;major#8221; complaint comes in, the one you don#8217;t notice from the car.

This otherwise very SUV is saddled with a schnoz looks like Jimmy after he ran into a wall at speed (maybe in some of early crash testing).

undoubtedly a love it or hate it and I chose to hate it. You don#8217;t see it inside, however, which is the owner will spend of the quality time with the

On the other hand, it#8217;s an interesting, kind of #8220;retro#8221; that brings to mind days of aviation, which is of a strange thing to find on is otherwise an extremely modern-looking But while beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I the nose is by far the B9 Tribeca#8217;s weakest especially since from the and the rear t looks so new and fresh.

it#8217;s a completely different The Tribeca has a benign, nay sublime, especially for the people in the front Sit behind the wheel and you#8217;re embraced in a set of loving arms, is the swoopy, curvy design of the and console #8211; extending to the doors.

The seats are comfortable and supportive, are just where they be #8211; and even though are unusual in their operation HVAC controls, for example), very intuitive.

The overall fit and is excellent.

I really liked the wipers. Not only do they do a job of clearing wetness from the big window, but they have a zillion variable intermittent which I found very

The Tribeca has a terrific greenhouse all offering excellent visibility. praise doesn#8217;t extend to the however. It works well, and a push of the button opens it pushes to close), but I was expecting hoping for) one a lot larger.

The on the last Forester Turbo I was practically big enough to parachute and I loved it. Still, this so much a flaw as a difference of over the optimal size of a (I like #8216;em big!).

Subaru and I also must on the quality of the stereo. The AM/FM CD changer works well, and is as to use as the rest of the vehicle, but though the sound quality was okay, the needs better amplifiers it ran out of steam all too quickly.

The front in my tester were covered leather and featured bun warmers. a comfortable driving position was The sensors in the front passenger are quite sensitive, too.

One I parked my notebook PC on it and the vehicle insisting that I had a passenger and me to strap it in: the warning light on the panel kept hounding me I put the PC on the floor (where it undoubtedly have been in the first

The rear seats (the seats in the 7 passenger model) and folds 40/20/40 and offers room for two adults to ride in though it may be a tad tight for three on a long trip.

On the road, the Tribeca#8217;s ride to the firm side, though not harsh, and it feels surprisingly The suspension is fully independent, the are power-assisted discs with ABS all (with electronic brake distribution) and the steering is speed power assisted rack and

The Tribeca comes with tires on its 18 inch wheels.

standard features include side, and curtain airbags, automatic climate control, driver and passenger seats, and remote control garage opener.

Subaru has done a nice job with the B9 Tribeca. It me how the vehicle looks quite on the outside, yet turns out to be very inside, and the warm, ergonomically interior is a pleasure to be in.

With a bit of this just could be the SUV around.

The Subaru B9 Tribecastarting price is $30,695 Canadian.
