Subaru Forester Touted by Subaru as a Hybrid vehicle in 1998 on its release, the Subaru Forester is a mixture of the Subaru Sedan and a Sport Utility Vehicle. The concept of the Forester came from the sub-compact Impreza station wagon. Raising the roof and adding extra dimensions to its body made it somewhat different. Pretty soon this Japanese mini-SUV became a common household word.

The Forester looked more rugged than Subaru’s Impreza sedan and less like a wagon than the Outback. The Forester attempts to combine the best of both worlds, its great for the daily routines and as a weekend warrior for the family camping trips. It’s more powerful than the small SUVs in its market segment and is backed by a renowned four-wheel-drive system.

Many people come to Subaru dealerships all over the country for their reliability. Many ask for performance nowadays, with the Forester, Subaru has finally combined both aspects. There were three trims presented in its initial run, the Base trim, L trim and the S trim. All of them utilized Subaru’s horizontally opposed, 165-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, on loan from the compact Legacy.

A 5-speed manual transmission was standard for all the trims and there was a 4-speed automatic transmission that was optional. Forester’s standard all-wheel-drive system sensed wheel slip and automatically sent power to the wheels with the most traction.

By 2003, the Forester was given a complete makeover which made it more exciting, powerful and attractive. The trims were cut now to only two, tagged as the X and the upper level trim the XS.

Both trims sports Subaru’s all-wheel-drive system, a horizontally opposed 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, and some upgraded suspension components. A five speed manual and a 4 speed automatic transmission can be chosen for both trims, these transmissions operate with two different all-wheel-drive systems: Manual transmissions use what Subaru calls Continuous All-Wheel Drive; automatic transmissions use Active All-Wheel Drive. Many features and options are offered in this model year that makes the Forester seem so luxurious.

Soon enough a Turbo version is released tagged the XT. The Forester has come a long way and it looks like it’s going places. For each generation the Subaru Forester produces, the better it gets; more power, more space better capabilities and a driving performance like no other.

The Subaru Forester is here to stay and dominate, Veni, Vidi, Vici.
