Skoda Superb

The recently upgraded Skoda Superb is a very large family Hatchback and Estate car, it has limousine sized rear passenger space and luxury well above its price tag, particularly in Elegance trim. The Superb has been awarded luxury car of the year by Top Gear and the four wheel drive estate version was awarded towing car of the year 2014 by the Caravan Club.

The Superb#8217;s biggest commodity is space and comfort, headroom is excellent in front and rear and the driving position welcoming thanks to a wide range of adjustment in both the seat and steering wheel. The Superb is reasonably agile for a big car, in both estate and hatchback forms. It has consistently weighted, accurate steering and good body control.

The Superb is at its best on the motorway, remaining effortlessly stable and keeping wind and road noise at bay.

The Skoda Superb, despite looking like a saloon car,  has a wonderful trick up its sleeve, what appears to be a normal boot can convert into a hatchback making loading large objects into the car a breeze, the rear seats can also fold flat to create an enormous load space increasing the capacity from an impressive 595 litres up to an astonishing 1,700 litres. The estate version trumps this with boot space increasing to 633 litres or 1,865litres with the rear seats flat.

The interior of the Superb is a fantastic place to be and the level of  standard equipment complements the car, entry level #8216;S#8217; models offer 16#8243; alloy wheels, air-conditioning, cruise control, 7-airbags, multi function leather steering wheel, front fog lights, all round electric windows, electric heated door mirrors, bluetooth phone connectivity and rear LED lights, the #8216;SE#8217; increases the high levels of comfort with 17#8243; alloys, alcantara upholstery, rear parking sensors, touchscreen ‘Bolero’ stereo with integrated 6CD autochanger and dual-zone air-conditioning. Elegance is the top model as a mobility car offering 18#8243; alloys, full leather upholstery, ‘Columbus’ touchscreen satellite navigation, electrically adjustable heated driver and passenger seats and bi-xenon lights with LED running lights.

There are both petrol and diesel engines available, the entry level petrol engine is only 1.4 litres but still manages to pull this big car around comfortably and the 1.8 petrol is sprightly enough but it is the diesel engines that are the better fit for such a large car, the 1.6 litre diesel unit, though it only produces 105 brake horse power it can get you to 62 miles per hour in 12.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 117 miles per hour, as well as 61.4 miles per gallon or 65.7 in Greenline form, the engine is well balanced and power is evenly delivered. The larger two litre diesel (140 or 170bhp) is our pick, available with a six speed manual or six speed DSG automatic in either front or all wheel drive the 140bhp will pull the car to 62 mph in 10 seconds and the larger unit in 8.6 seconds, economy is excellent in either form 61.4 mpg for the 140bhp as a manual or 54.3 as an automatic, the 170 can return 60.1 mpg or 52.3 as an automatic. As a four wheel drive car the 140 engine is available only with a manual gearbox (53.3 mpg) and the 170 only as an automatic (49.6 mpg)
