Etecno have been manufacturing glow plugs for over 30 year and invest heavily in new technology, research and development. This is essential to conform to the strict pollution requirements in many European Countries.

Diesel engines produce the highest amount of pollution during the first few minutes after starting. If the glow plugs stay on during this short time, the temperature into the pre-chamber, or into the combustion chamber of a direct injection engine, remains at about 1000 degrees Celcius allowing a better ignition and reducing the emission of polluting gasses by about 30 – 40%.

The Directive n. 91-542/EEC of the 1st October 1991, has forced all the vehicles manufacturers to provide the new engines with specific controllers. Our GENESIS range of glow plugs has been developed to uniform to the EEC Directive and according to the parameters of the engines manufacturers for a quick Pre-heating (4 to 7 sec.) and Post heating time (up to 180 sec. after starting at an average of 14V) As a result, from an application point of view, this new generation of glow plugs, that we call GENESIS . can substitute all the older STANDARD models having the same dimension and without the post-heating phase.

All the glow plugs will be marked with the original rated Voltage, while the GENESIS can be marked with the battery Voltage (i.e. 12V or 24V) when their characteristics allow the replacement of more than one STANDARD reference.

In the Japanese engines the relays carry out a dual purpose: Open so to permit the pre-heating at the battery forward voltage (12V or 24V); Pilot during post-heating by means of the automatic insertion of a resistance that, after starting, reduces the current to the voltage marked on the glow plug. In these circumstances the indication of the voltage on the glow plug does not imply a specific feature of the glow plug itself but the voltage the relay forwards during the post-heating to hold the temperature at 900/1000 degrees C for a period of about 15 seconds.

How do you test a glow plug?

The best way to test your glow plugs is with an ohm meter. Place one lead on the terminal and the other on the heating element. If it registers 0.00 then the part is bad.

Why replace your Glow Plugs?

Diesel glow plugs live a hard life. They are subject to extreme temperature changes and high combustion pressures. Since a diesel engine may have as many glow plugs, one for each cylinder, you may not notice when one goes bad. But if two, three or more go bad, you will notice the engine has become very difficult to start. When a glow plug wears out, it is important that ALL plugs are replaced.

Over-voltage is the most common failure of a glow plug as well as excessive oil consumption, excessive or irregular fuel due to injectors not functioning correctly. Some vehicles use a Glow Plug Relay so you may not know you have any bad glow plugs. When fitting new glow plugs always test the timer is operating correctly. Older engines used a glow period of up to 21 seconds where as more modern engines use around 6 to 8 second heat period and provide after glow at a reduced voltage.

If the pump timing is not correct or the engine is over fuelled this can also damage the glow plugs with increased vibration and heat.

General Installation Instructions

Please make sure to clean glow plug holes of engine well, so plug can be inserted easily and smoothly.

Apply anti seize compound then tighten glow plug with fingers first up to plug seat, then retighten to 1.5 – 2.0 kg-m.

Follow heating conditions as specified by the engine manufacturer.
