Seat Ibiza St Review

THE SEAT Ibiza ST has just made its showroom debut in the UK with a price tag of £12,070 for the entry-level 1.4-litre 16V S model.

This third member of the Ibiza line-up joins the sporty Ibiza SC and the practical Ibiza five-door and catapults itself into SEAT’s history books as part of the most extensive range in the Spanish supermini’s 25-year history.

Part of the giant VW Group, which famed for its build quality and competitively priced models, SEAT has not only taken on board VW’s teaching in the art of automotive engineering but has in many ways overtaken the master.

This latest model – a compact estate – is the epitome of quality. It handles well, has a silk smooth gearbox, an even smoother suspension, and boasts a high standard specification, as well as being frugal on fuel and frugal on pricing.

Prices range from just over £12,000, through engine and equipment levels, to £14,910 for the Ibiza ST 1.2 TDI CR Ecomotive in luxurious SE spec.

There is little doubt that the ST model is another sleek product of the pen of SEAT’s chief designer, Luc Donckerwolke, and has been created to offer more carrying capacity without compromising on the sporty eye catching style.

Boot space is up 138 litres over the five-door taking the car’s carrying capacity to a 430 litres with the seats up, more of course with the seats folded.

Offered with numerous petrol or diesel engines, and with the option of a either five-speed manual or seven-speed DSG gearbox, the star of the ST range is the one in Ecomotive form, which boasts CO2 emissions of 92g/km, and a staggering combined fuel economy figure of 80.7mpg.

I will not go into too much detail regarding the engine range differences, suffice to say that it is extensive, and irrespective of whether there is a petrol engine or a diesel unit under the bonnet, the performance is fully in keeping with the brand’s sporty ethos.

The clearest example of what I mean, is the behaviour of the  most dynamic version, the 1.2 TSI with a DSG-auto box, that covers the 0-62mph dash in  10.1 seconds before redlining, where legal, to a top speed of 118mph.

The ST is not only is it a family estate that offers buyers practicality, but it has a sporty edge as well as  a selection of common sense features that make it as ‘sensible’ as it is ‘chic’.

Folding rear sears with a 60/40 bias, roof rails, a low load height and wide rear hatch to a flat boot floor and innovative storage optionsare all bonus points.

All Ibiza ST buyers will appreciate the generous standard-fit kit that includes, air conditioning, four-speaker stereo radio with MP3-compatible CD, steering column-mounted audio controls, electric front windows, speed sensitive electro-hydraulic power steering and remote central locking with deadlocks.

Safety also plays a major role in this model’s make-up with all versions featuring head and chest airbags for both driver and front seat passenger, head-thorax front side airbags, front passenger airbag disconnection, ABS and three three-point rear seatbelts.

Options are available, depending spec choices, such as SEAT’s clever electronic XDS system – which mimics the function of a conventional limited slip differential – and electronic stability programme.

On the subject of options, ST buyers will also be able to specify extras like climate control (including a refrigerated glove compartment); bi-xenon headlights, headlight washers and daytime running lights; a panoramic glass sunroof (in lieu of roof rails) and a variety of alloy wheels that can measure up to 17 inches.

Without any doubt the ST will carve out a niche for itself as buyers warm to its looks, flexibility and performance.
