In Memoriam #8211; SEAT Sport Tech

Posted By Auty on Apr 4, 2013

As I write the SEAT Exeo Sport I do so in the knowledge that its days are SEAT have decided the Exeo will be taken off the later this year and it be replaced.

What should been a review finds turning into more of an Should we mourn the loss of saloon or should we let it pass give it a couple of days and move on with our lives?

Exeo Sport Tech (2013)

What Model Is

This is the Exeo Sport which sits at the top of the range the S and SE. The #8216;Tech#8217; part of the name you that this has a number of extras on top of the usual Sport including black leather Bose stereo upgrade iPod connection and 2 SD card and sat-nav with 6.5-inch screen built into the console.

That#8217;s on top of the bi-xenon with cornering function and LED running lights, LED lighting at the dual-zone climate control, 6 multi-function computer with screen, auto lights and and cruise control.

The Sport model would ride on 18-inch #8216;Quartz#8217; but this is an Ecomotive model so means you get smaller 16-inch wheels for improved economy.Shame, as the 18s are nicer.

Ecomotive rides on not 18s like other Sport

What#8217;s Under The Bonnet?

You can the Exeo with a 211PS 2.0 TSI or a selection of 2.0-litre diesels. particular one has the 143PS Ecomotive a common-rail diesel that with stop/start technology to a few extra miles out of each With an official combined of 62.8mpg and CO2 emissions of just this is a car that will be to run and slots into Band C on the VED

It Looks Familiar. Very

It#8217;s difficult to talk the Exeo without the subject of its coming up. Can you remember the previous Audi A4 (the #8216;B6/B7#8242; built between 2001 and Smart, wasn#8217;t it? Highly too.

Now stick a SEAT on it, add those Audi-esque headlights with LED strips and hey presto, got the Exeo.

Exeo#8217;s side profile is familiar and nicely proportioned

The of the Exeo are so closely related to the A4 SEAT actually went as far as the entire Audi A4 B7 production in Ingolstadt and re-assembled it at their in Martorell, Spain.

Should the be derided because it#8217;s on Audi#8217;s cast-offs or should we it for recycling what was a very car but with a new design, new engine and some Germanic design Personally I#8217;ll go for the latter, not because it#8217;s a bit of a bargain.

Exeo will set you back including the Ice Silver metallic at £495. If you were to price up an A4 with the same engine and as this Sport Tech it cost you in excess of £32,000. the interior will be a bit more and the on-board computer will be advanced but really, is that an extra £7,000?

What#8217;s It To Drive?

Don#8217;t let the #8216;Sport#8217; fool you, this is more of a cruiser than a implement with which to your favourite road. The setup is soft enough to be but not so soft that the Exeo into a wallowy barge the bends.

Nose looks good but too big a role in Exeo#8217;s balance

it with gusto and it won#8217;t you much back in the way of reward. The is very much biased the front, with the heavy inducing understeer as soon as you to push on. The multi-link fully front and rear suspension lead you to think this be a sports saloon but the handling is described as tidy rather sharp.

At least the Exeo is and won#8217;t spring any nasty on you if you do find yourself running out of

The diesel engine is a typical VAG unit with that punchy mid-range that#8217;s to exploit via the six-speed manual It runs out of puff above and gets a bit vocal when you push it, but the #8216;Ecomotive#8217; badge mean you#8217;re lumbered a sluggish engine.

It is also economical if you drive it sensibly and I was able to match the official figures on a couple of trips. My average for the week was a respectable over 350 miles, not bad when you this is a 1,505kg family

What#8217;s It Like To Live

The Exeo is classed as a medium/large and it lives up to that label. The offers its occupants plenty of with no elbow rubbing up and enough head and leg room in the for all but the tallest of adults. It#8217;s not the exciting of places to sit but everything like it is built to last.

find all of the toys you need on the dashboard.

The upgraded Bose system is very good. The speakers provide loud and tunes and the SD card slots are for loading up with MP3 files.

I also mention the heated They#8217;re some of the best tried, beating even fantastic seats for sheer power. The heating is included the optional winter pack but on a winter morning you#8217;ll the cosy warmth they

Six airbags, ESP and traction control make the Exeo a safe and Euro NCAP rated it as a car in 2010.

What#8217;s Wrong It?

The biggest problem I found is the multimedia and sat-nav systems, to the Exeo, are far from intuitive. The and menu navigation required a bit of and error to find the option you and it was difficult to use while driving. The just requires a bit more and I know SEAT can do better as the system fitted to the Leon FR+ I last year was far superior.

Fewer buttons, better easier to use.

I also the sat-nav screen to be mounted too requiring me to take my eyes off the for longer than necessary to the information on the screen.

The lack of a DAB even as an option, is one glaring from an otherwise generous With digital on the rise and the radio signal likely to be off in the next couple of years it be long before you#8217;d be to replace the radio.

The Final

For the Exeo to be dropped after four years is a shame. It not have the sophisticated underpinnings of of the newer members of the VAG group but it manages to be a decent car, and one of the best value models by the VAG group.

Its biggest problem seems to be it is one of those cars that has escaped the attention of potential I was genuinely surprised by the number of looks I received when I people what I was driving. I if the similarities to the A4 have worked it, with people mistaking the for an A4 when they see one on the road.

If the had more of an identity of its own, than borrowing so much its German relation, maybe it have stood out more. it really needed was a sporty FR or even a Cupra to spice up the

So farewell, dear Exeo. It was to have the opportunity to try it but I don#8217;t it#8217;s a car that#8217;s going to be missed when its gone. Not it was a bad car, but because it never enough of an impression for people to its absence.
