Rover 820 was slowly losing over time. During the / months that this car was coolant we kept topping the up to the maximum level, until we work out what was going

The first item to reveal a was the coolant/reservoir overflow bottle had developed a small pinhole This was replaced with a new Rover part from the X-part dealer. Thinking the would now be working properly, it was not before we realised the car was still coolant!

We still did not know or how we were losing any coolant, we suspected the Head Gasket! the radiator on the Rover 800 Coupe to develop a small leak, so we to take a look at the radiator on car too.

At first we found but because the weather had been the for 30 years, and not only did we need to the radiator on the coupe, but the Jeep radiator went the in same few (all had 50/50 coolant but they were all now aged we took another look. time we took a look at with torches, only now we see the small glimmer of a reflection one side of the radiator, along the where the veins are clamped to the tanks.

The leak was so small that the was all being evaporated, before any reach the ground. making it a hard leak to find! A new was purchased and fitted, hurray!

The was we were still losing Two thumbs were never to be enough to stop this leaking!

For a few weeks we just had to go to square one topping up the coolant as and it was needed. That was until a pool of coolant appeared the car one day!

Now we knew we had a leak. but the leak was so small it took us a few of checking before we could tell whereabouts this leak was coming from?

a few days later, the small as you are driving drip’, became a drip. Now we could finally see a underneath the vehicle, and tracing location upwards, it had to be coming the water pump area.

We had not even suspected the water because it had never made any and normally we would associated a water pump with loud squealing noises you might expect to hear! For reason we thought the water must be okay, maybe we need some new seals and so a new set of was ordered.

By the time the new water seals finally arrived a few later, the car was dripping constantly was now about a litre of water a A couple of people had also to us that a seeping water is a sign that the water is on its way out! But we thought as we have ordered just the seals, we may as try them first anyway buying a new water pump.

We the old water pump out and it was pretty the old seals were well and the water pump itself to have very little to no in it, so we though we must of ordered the part then.

We removed the old and cleaned up the water pump, it with the new seals (using a amount of grease to hold the seals in place while we it to the car). The water pump holes on the engine housing had been cleared of muck had accumulated.

Having refitted the water we started to fill it with Once we got above a certain it was immediately obvious that was pouring out from the water area! so I decided to see what happen if I started the car. On the engine, the leaking stopped but on turning the engine off the coolant flooding back out of the water drain holes.

It seemed those drain holes the fault was with the water and not the 3 changeable seals (even they were on their way

We ordered a new water pump, for under Ј50 from X-part we more than happy to as the old water pump had been for over 90,000 miles. We did not to order a cheaper one elsewhere can be had for around Ј30.

With the of swapping the water pumps bit easier this time, the new pump has the seals already into it’s channels, it was a case of a quick swap-over the car was still on the ramps.

As soon as we added the coolant none pouring out from we already knew the problem was now even before we started the

That night though we did a little scare when the car a fresh small puddle of underneath it! Luckily it was just the Clip on the hose requiring a extra tightening!

Even the New Coolant Reservoir Bottle and New Solving 2 Leaks, the Leak Searched for the Next Weakest The Coolant Level is Now Falling by a a Day, and the Car Can Not be left to Leak any

The Drip a Day, to Drip a to Drip a Minute, to Drip a has now got to the Stage Where the Dripping has

and the Flow has Started!

Now the Coolant can be Traced Back Upwards to the Pump Housing Area!

the Hose to the Water Pump Made it Slightly Easier to the 5 Bolts Required for Removal of the Pump Cover.

With The Removed, You can now See the Water Pump 1 of the

The Seal on this Side of the Pump did not Appear to be Very

The Seals on this side not as Bad to Look at, Had over time themselves to the Water Pump!

The Seal was Very Easy to

The Second and Third Seals Firmly Stuck, and Needed Away!

The Water Pump was Given a Thorough Cleaning! Included Using Cotton to Clear the Muck Out of the 2 Drain

The Water Pump Seal have Now Been Cleaned up to Insert the New Seals into.

The New of 3 Water Seals (Part PFQ10001L) only cost Ј6 and Should Provide a Cheap

The Water Pump Seals a Little Grease Used to them in Place whilst the Water Pump.

The Water Has Now Been Bolted Back Place on the Engine.

The Coolant was (via the Coolant Bottle) up to the of the Pipe, then the Pipe was on and Tightened up.

All that was Required now was to the Coolant Bottle

The Coolant was Refilled with a 50/50 Mix of and Distilled Water. The Coolant Out Again Though, Even the Engine Was Switched Off! was Due to the Water Pump itself No Good, and the Fact that we Had the Drain Holes was Not Helping (With the Engine Running the Would Stop, so the New Seals Working!)(Trouble was as soon as the Engine was Off again, the Coolant Would out Again! Through the (Worn Seal on the) Pump )

A Brand New Water Pump was from X-part for around Ј45 No. PEB102420) this was Fitted the day.

Unfortunately I only (just as I was Tightening up the last that I had not Taken a Photo of the New Pump!

The New Water Pump with the Set of Seals already Set the Channels.

Later that we did Get a Slight Scare when we Saw a Puddle of Coolant Underneath the Luckily it was Just the Jubilee on the Hose, that was Leaking, and a Tighten did the Trick!
