Review: 2013 Nissan

Eleven years ago, Altima became a major in the midsize sedan segment on the of three things: bold a roomy rear seat, and a 3.5-liter V6 engine good for 240 (the competition used V6s that topped out at 200 horses). The model year redesign the exterior, compacted the interior, and the conventional automatic with a  Nissan shifted even of them.

With the redesigned Altima, Nissan will be if potential buyers learn one thing about the car, its EPA of 38 MPG highway. No one else’s midsize comes close without oil or discharging batteries. But you don’t me to stop here, do you?

It over a hundred million to procure new sets of stamping for a high volume model the Altima. What did Nissan get for its outlay? The metal fab folks are proud of the depth of the stampings for the new trunk lid sets a new company Passersby failed to notice the new lid. Or the rest of the new metal, for matter.

Look closely, and the exterior styling includes interesting details, such as the way the stand proud of the fenders viewed from the rear. A line that takes off an oversized grille then outward as it moves rearward dominate the body sides of upcoming Nissans, but it doesn’t manage to integrate the curvaceous clip with the relatively body that follows it.

One fussy detail lifted the Maxima: wake-like depressions the door handles. The relationship the arrowhead headlight clusters and the circular front wheel opening is, shall we say, Of course, typical midsize buyers won’t look and so won’t notice these any more than they the trunk lid stamping.

In person, the new looks less special it does in many of these photos (all of which are of the V6). Hyundai and Ford are more immediately eye-catching

The 2002 Altima had one big weakness: an cheap interior. A 2005 and 2007 redesign brought upgrades, but left the cabin short of best-in-class. The 2013 elevates the interior another or two, most notably a wider console and upgraded Just opt for black; the tan clashes the motley assortment of silverish pieces.

Regardless of interior the chunky silver metallic that frames the center should have been in the Toyota it was lifted from. But is the IP to the touch? Partially. The face is the top is hard.

An intelligent, cost-effective but not nearly as artfully executed as in the Verano. On the other hand, are better than the current with easy to reach for major functions.

Open the door and drop one of the things that make “the most innovative ever”: NASA-inspired “zero front seats. With one exception, I found them comfortable, with a substantial and a fit like a baseball glove. (My impressions were less

With seats, opinions are to vary.) The one exception: the headrests jut so far that I removed them and them backwards (a safety-compromising I first employed in a then-new Malibu). Nissan apparently belong to the pillbox school of design, so visibility is pretty all around.

Those troubled by the de high deck can opt for the SL’s Package. This package an innovative rearview camera handles blind zone lane departure warning, and detection in addition to washing and itself. The lane departure was a bit slow to sound the alarm in cases, a bit too quick in others, but who have thought they provide all of these features via a rear-facing camera?

You no longer to be rich to be beeped at every few just a touch sloppy the wheel.

Rear legroom and volume aren’t best-in-segment, but not too far off. As is often the case sweeping coupe-ish rooflines, is in shorter supply than People over 5-11 become familiar with the

Rear air vents are included the SV and SL.

The 3.5-liter V6 is carried over, so its remains 270 horsepower. The 2.5-liter gets a modest bump 175 to 182 horsepower. As with the exterior Nissan has left costly and direct injection to Ford and

The continuously variable transmission received much more A thorough revamp reduced friction by 40 percent and widened the spread (with the four) to about even with an automatic and enabling the engine to at 1,450 rpm at 60 mph. Combine with a 79-pound curb reduction (to a compact-like 3,108 and you get the highly touted 38 mpg EPA highway and 27 in the city, way up from 32 and 23 with the

The next-best Camry manages 25 city / 35 highway. My right spent too much time the floor to judge how achievable figures will be in the real

Nissans claims that an tester got the four-cylinder Altima to in 7.14 seconds. My …-meter mid-to-high eights, and that the all-too-typical big four commotion the hood. If you want anything pleasurable performance, you’ll over another two or three and take a fuel economy hit (to to get the much more energetic V6.

With the six you also get shift through which you can force the CVT to a quick-shifting seven-speed automatic. In though, I didn’t mind the of the mandatory CVT, especially not paired with the V6. Floor the go and the CVT gradually ramps the engine up its rpm power peak, then it there.

Very smooth, and little if any of the dreaded “rubber effect that typified CVTs.

Nissan claims the 2013 Altima is “the engaging product in the segment”. but then midsize sedans a uniformly soporific segment. this positioning (and cost) in mind, Nissan has the 2013 car with electro-hydraulic than pure electric The feel through the wheel is light and well-insulated, and not as quick or as as that through the Maxima’s diameter tiller.

Last the V6 was only available in sport-suspended SR This year it’s as an S, SV, or SL, but not as an SR. There#8217;s also no Sport Perhaps Nissan felt the car behaved well enough one? Throw the V6 sedan into a curve and it toes the with moderate body and minimal plowing.

The latter is curbed by brake-activated “active control”, another of the features (along with a uniquely rear suspension lower make this “the innovative Altima ever#8221;. feature is intended to operate It did.

Suspension tuning is much the with the four, but its higher tires quickly lapse a mushy scrub. For cornering as as straight line performance, the V6 its 235/45VR18 performance tires is the way to go. Yet, aware that the majority of midsize sedan care little for performance or Nissan projects that ten percent will go this

The 2013 sedan’s ride is smooth, well-damped, and quiet either tire, a notable over past Altimas and an achievement given the low curb A 2013 Malibu is cushier and but it also weighs a quarter-ton and handles like a parade

Eager to pass the Camry in Nissan has trimmed the Altima’s (when comparably equipped) by a hundred dollars. The base starts at $22,280. An SL V6 with the Tech Package lists for

I haven’t yet input the 2013 and features into TrueDelta’s comparison tool. but a comparison of suggests that a Hyundai will continue to be about less before adjusting for differences, and about $2,500 afterwards. A Toyota Camry continue to undercut the Altima by a few dollars with the four and by a thousand dollars with a V6. This is comparing sticker compare invoice prices and the price advantage can grow to $2,000.

The 2013 Nissan Altima cheap, and it doesn’t stand out the crowd aside from the highest EPA numbers and (only on a loaded car) a multi-talented camera. But even without USPs and in its sixth year the Altima has been outselling other car except the recently Camry—and it hasn’t been far the Camry. If you were at Nissan, you want to be the person whose move” derailed the gravy

If something has been working and especially if there’s no obvious why it has been working so well, you futz with it. For the most Nissan hasn’t.

Nissan airfare to Nashville, a very hotel, regional cuisine, all we drink (one writer for a magazine missed the drive; security entered his room at they found him passed out on the bed still fully clothed), musical entertainment at the Loveless a tour of the Jack Daniels (skipped as I’d already seen too alcohol, an error I won’t repeat), many friendly and insured, fueled automobiles.
