Review: 2010 Mazda

My youngest child, of three, eight next month. A few ago, when it became that regularly working 3 AM and then dealing with the in the morning was not good for anyone’s we added an au pair. So there are six in the house. Anyone with would have gotten a something-or-other at least eight ago. And probably when the child was still in utero.

that I am, a decade on I’m still for one to sweep me off my feet. I tend to a thing for Mazdas. Mazda the three-row CX-9. So, why not the CX-9?

In drives back in 2007 and we didn’t quite hit it off. we just needed more together? Ever hopeful, I a week with the 2010.

face it: in automotive love, matter. Mazda had the right with the CX-9, giving it the curves of a sporty car rather the chunkiness of an SUV. But the execution quite work, for two reasons.

Wide black plastic arch moldings, a stray SUV make already overly wheel openings (leaving for something larger than the Touring’s dubs?) appear larger. Though this equivalent of too much eyeliner provides much-needed rust trimmer moldings would achieved the same.

Second, a car-like front end with graphics and simply raising it a few visually accentuates the front while giving the designers lower fascia than can handle. With the 2007-2009 the designers essentially ignored the leaving the vehicle with a chin. For the 2010 they it up, super-sizing and enchroming the smiley grille and foglamp surrounds.

someone decided that the new grille was way too large, so they a chrome strip (braces?) in a attempt to visually divide it. An over the 2007-2009, but not enough of

Not that everyone agrees my evaluation. The CX-9 certainly has its My family found it attractive, when clothed in “copper red Also, the CX-9’s curves and successfully disguise its size x 76 x 68 inches) and mass (4,550 My wife has rejected SUVs as as the Hyundai Tucson as “too The CX-9 provoked no such

Inside the designers have more successful, with a mod interior that’s both and sportier than you’ll in competitors. The downward sweeping “I believe it’s not wood” that frames the center in the Grand Touring is mirrored in the panels. Both this and the mirrored horizontal bands of plastic trim (starting to dated) work best in the interior.

The light gray in the tested car isn’t as striking, and be harder to keep clean, but airier. In either interior the tailored armrests lend a touch of class. The Mazda3-class not so much. And what’s up with the height adjustment for the xenons?

The previous tester (or perhaps the one him?) left them in lowest position, where in an vehicle they essentially as really strong fog lights.

a steeply raked but not overly windshield and an unusually tall console, the CX-9’s driving is easily the most car-like three-row people haulers. The the CX-9’s cabin feels and considerably less roomy that of a Lambda, Flex, or minivan.

Both the second and rows are mounted low to the floor and less legroom than find in the aforementioned competitors (if than in the all-but-… Hyundai and Subaru Tribeca). Ditto the area with the third row up; it have been enough for our trip last summer.

putting kids in the back? no problem…except the only rear air are on the aft face of the center console. are none in the rear walls or Almost as bad: the controls for the HVAC are similarly located—only can be performed from the driver’s After tipping-and-sliding the second row to access to the third row, it returned to its previous position, times it acquired amnesia.

I’ve been waiting for all years, physics bedamned: a vehicle that’s fun to drive. didn’t lend its EcoBoost to the yet the 273-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 (shared the Lincoln MKS and MKT) would be enough if the Aisin six-speed transmission were not so keen to lug it and so to respond to requests for more

Fuel economy is not a strength: MPG in mildly aggressive driving, and 8.7 in hoon mode. The much powerful and heavier Ford EcoBoost did a bit better. The 3.7 does at sound better here in Lincoln applications.

And the handling? The moderately firm but indecisive requires frequent small Feedback is minimal; the head that there’s plenty of in sweeping curves, never the body roll, but the fingertips and of the pants haven’t a clue.

of the class, tight curves are a for understeer. It’s easier to a close connection with a GM isn’t normally the master of things.

A strength that’s of the problem: the CX-9 often like it’s moving more slowly than it is. The body roll seems partly because the minimal of speed encourages taking more aggressively than one in a minivan. Not that the ride is smooth and quiet.

The Grand Touring’s 245/50R20 aren’t a good match for the suspension tuning, and can get thumpy, over expansion joints.

If been overly critical of the it’s because I so much to love it, and instead merely it, and not nearly all of it. The styling and driving lay the groundwork for a driving experience more sport sedan minivan. And, objectively, the performs and handles better anything else in its class.

But the experience, while laudably is otherwise lacking. The Mazda drives better than perhaps even all, but not by a large enough margin to devotion and earn forgiveness for its
