Revealed: the new Nissan Qashqai

Nissan has officially revealed the second-generation Qashqai crossover, with an all-new design, increased efficiency and an array of safety technologies. It will go on sale on January 2014.

Nissan successor to its successfull crossover model, produced in more than 2 million units since 2007, has been revealed in London today.

Designed mainly for the European market, the new Qashqai has been designed by Nissan Design Europe (London, UK) and engineered at the Nissan Technical Centre Europe (Cranfield, UK and Barcelona, Spain), with support from Nissan’s designers and engineers in Atsugi, Japan.

Compared to the outgoing model, the new Qashqai is 49mm longer, 20mm wider and 15mm lower, which gives it a sleeker stance while maintaining the crossover style, compact dimensions and raised driving position.

The dynamic character of the new model is also underlined by the different profile design, with muscular shoulders and fenders, a sleeker graphic theme for the DLO and more aggressively-shaped headlights. Another distinctive exterior feature is the clamshell-style, raised hood.

The surface treatment of the flanks is more in tune with the current trends, and features several creases that lend a sculpted appearane while defining the main volumes.

The headlights #8211; equipped with LED daytime running lights as standard, can be ordered with full LED technology for both dip and main beam.

The radar was positioned behind the bumper fascia #8211; and not mounted in the bumper or front grille openings #8211; to give the car a smoother look.

The attention to aerodynamic efficiency resulted in a reduction of the drag coefficient to 0.32.

Additional aerodynamic elements include thee roof spoiler with winglets, a distinctive flat floor design, and the Active Grille Shutter system, which closes off airflow through the radiator at speeds over 30kph when not needed.

The interior is characterized by a higher material quality as well as a greater occupant space #8211; Despite this reduction in height, front and rear headroom levels have  increased by 10mm and the raised driving position remains #8211; and a larger luggage capacity enhanced by a variable floor system.

The new Qashqai will be equipped with an array of premium technologies, including the Nissan Safety Shield package (Front Collision Avoidance, Driver Attention Support and Traffic Sign Recognition, among the others) plus Intelligent Park Assist, Around View Monitor and the new NissanConnect with smartphone app integration.

All the engines feature a turbocharger to reduce capacity, fuel consumption and emissions #8211; with CO2 values starting from only 99g/km.

The units will be offered in combination with six-speed manual or all-new Xtronic transmissions and with both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive.

Going on sale from January 2014, the new Qashqai will be built in Sunderland, UK, based on the new CMF (Common Module Family) Renault-Nissan Alliance platform .
