Renault Winery is the oldest winery in NJ, and the second oldest in the country. For this reason it has a type of landmark status.  This is why you can’t just waltz in for a tasting, but instead you have to wait for a tour before getting to the booze. Surprisingly though, the tour was actually really interesting!

Also, to avoid a lot of downtime, keep in mind that the tours are offered every hour on the hour.

Wow were we disappointed.

We arrived late evening on a Sunday. OK I know that is always asking for trouble, well we found it!

The night started at Joseph’s with the hostess having trouble finding a table for us. We could see the restaurant which has 50-60 tables was inhabited by about six parties, but the computer could not find us a table.

We were seated, about 15 minutes later we were finally approached by a bus boy asking if we were being taken care of? Nope! we weren’t. He apologized and brought us water. asking if he could see THAT referring to my wife’s water glass. he also brought us some delicious bread. not knowing what the oil and olive dish was that he served with the bread, but it was delicious.

OK the server came and did not speak English, but he tried to explain the specials. we ordered off the menu.

I ordered Boneless Chicken Breast with spaghetti, tomato basil sauce and fresh mozzarella. I got Breaded Chicken Parmagian. OK the heading on the menu says PARMIGIANO G I ANO.

I never knew that meant breaded. My wife ordered Crab and Lobster Medallions, spaghettini, vine ripe cherry tomatoes, saffron tomato broth. The waiter told us (in broken English) Saffron was like paprika, it was red. My wife wanted to know if the sauce was heavy or lite.

I also ordered an Ice Tea. By the way for an appetizer we had Romaine Hearts with creamy parmesan, croutons, and parmesan chards. What the hell is a Chard?

OK, dinner came 25 minutes after our Caesar Salad. My Chicken Parmigiana was so over cooked I could not cut it with a steak knife. The fresh mozzarella on top was nice. My wife’s seafood dish was excellent.

The pasta well it needed 3 more minutes to get to al dente. It was hard! Oh my Iced Tea? Yep. I’m still waiting! The food was served by a bus boy, we never saw the waiter again. No one ever checked on us. until we complained (which I never do. )

Is it ok to grate Parmagian Cheese over the dish hold the cheese block with your hand? Just wondering.

The manager of course was apologetic. She picked up the entire tab. We insisted on paying for the seafood dinner and salad, as we did enjoy it, but she said NO! Sh offered us a $20.00 coupon to come back!

I’m not sure.
