Audi is set to broaden its market reach in North America with the addition of a new price-leading sedan to its third-generation A3 lineup.

The new sedan, shown to the media Tuesday prior to the New York auto show. is set to make its public debut at the Shanghai motor show in April. Sales in the United States will start in early 2014.

The new A3 uses Audi’s modular transverse architecture platform, known as MQB. along with a host of other recently unveiled models from the Volkswagen Group, including the latest Volkswagen Golf .

At 175.6 inches long, 70.7 inches wide and 55.7 inches tall, the A3 sedan is 5.9 inches longer, 0.4 inches wider and stands 0.35 inches shorter than the A3 Sportback, with which it shares its 103.8-inch wheelbase.

These dimensions make it a considerable 6.7 inches shorter yet 0.75 inches wider and 0.75 inches lower than the recently unveiled Mercedes-Benz CLA. The new entry-level Audi sedan rides on a wheelbase that is 2.5 inches longer than its Mercedes-Benz rival.

The most significant styling change over the existing third-generation A3 Sportback is the addition of a traditional trunk. Audi says subtle styling revisions have also been made to the hood, bumpers and wheel arches. Trunk capacity is 15 cubic feet, nearly 2 cubic feet more than the A3 Sportback.

The rest of the cabin is otherwise identical to the Sportback.

The high performance S3 version runs a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with 296 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. It’s mated to a either a six-speed manual or dual clutch S-tronic gearbox and Haldex-style multi-plate-clutch quattro four-wheel drive system.

The transversely mounted direct injection engine is claimed to propel the S3 from 0 to 62 mph in 4.9 seconds and to a top speed of 155 mph with the dual clutch transmission — placing the S3 sedan among some highly regarded performance sedans for straight line speed.

Audi will offer buyers the choice of other four-cylinder engines in the front-drive A3 sedan, including 138-hp 1.4-liter and 168-hp 1.8-liter direct injection gasoline units, and a 138-hp 2.0-liter common rail diesel. The latter two engine are likely to be in the U.S. lineup.
