Rear View Mirror: VITAL MORGAN; Roadster still cuts a dash – but watch those corners.

Byline: Richard Hammond

HOW many cars begin with a bloke in a checked shirt shouting: Timber!? It’s not a joke. The Morgan Roadster The Morgan Roadster is the latest model produced by the Morgan Motor Company.

It was introduced in 2004 replacing the Morgan Plus 8. The car is identical to its predecessor except for new modern Ford V6 mechanicals. – still built in the middle of the beautiful Malvern Hills – is, in fact, half-timbered.

At a time when you can buy a pencil case made with Kevlar, carbon fibre and ceramic composites, the Morgan Motor Company The Morgan Motor Company is a British automobile manufacturer. The company was founded in 1910 by H.F.S. Morgan and was run by him until 1959.

Peter Morgan, son of H.F.S. ran the company until his death in 2003. chooses to soldier on building cars from the same stuff Noah went for when knocking up his ark.

Of course the wheels aren’t wood, or the windows, or quite a lot of other bits. The body is made up of aluminium panels and the chassis is part-aluminium, like the Lotus Elise The Lotus Elise is a roadster conceived in early 1994 and released in September 1996 by the English manufacturer Lotus Cars. The car has a hand-finished fiberglass body shell atop its aluminium extrusion and bonded frame that provides a rigid platform for the suspension, while.

There used to be a V8 lurking under that long, louvred bonnet, but emissions laws killed it off and Morgan replaced it with, horror of horrors, a V6.

Grown men, lifelong Morgan devotees, cried into their big beards. They needn’t have. The new Jaguar-sourced engine sounds spectacular, more like an old school straight-six than a modern vee.

The optional naughty sidepipes help; taking your foot off the throttle triggers an avalanche of fabulous crackles and bangs.

And it is by no means slow, hitting 60mph in 4.9 seconds – faster than a Porsche 911. It feels even quicker because you are barely inches from the ground. Smokers can drape drape

To cover, dress, or hang with or as if with cloth in loose folds.

A cloth arranged over a patient’s body during an examination or treatment or during surgery, designed to provide a sterile field around the area. a hand elegantly over the low-slung door to strike a match on the road – very, very cool.

Of course, things do come unravelled when you are confronted by a corner.

On a visit to the factory – a collection of large sheds full of chaps in brown coats – my guide pointed to a rolling chassis: There you go, sliding pillar A sliding pillar suspension is one in which the stub axle and wheel assembly are attached to a fixed vertical pillar or kingpin which slides up and down through a bush or bushes which are attached to the vehicle chassis, usually as part of transverse outrigger assemblies. front suspension, just like 80 years ago. He smiled contentedly.

We have tried messing about with settings and stuff but, well, it doesn’t seem to make much difference, really.

So corners are a very physical affair. You wrestle with the wheel, the front bounces and writhes and the rear end is always ready to overtake you – you can apparently specify traction control but that just doesn’t seem right. Remember, this car was styled in an era when chaps dismissed parachutes as cowardly.

Handbuilt can be another way of saying Thrown together by ill-trained teenagers, but the Roadster is coach-built by craftsmen. Customers can meet the man who builds their chassis, who stitches their leather interior. All this exclusivity and quality comes at a price.

The Roadster starts at pounds 34,992 and that’s before you’ve ordered luxury extras such as door handles (I kid you not).

How do I know all this? Well, call me crazy, but I ordered one. So soon, somewhere deep in an ash grove, a bloke in a checked shirt is going to shout timber and my Roadster will have begun playing its part in upholding a fine British tradition of determination, eccentricity and craftsmanship.
