SOTW: MG ZT+ 190

Shed spies a example of MG’s sporty on the Rover 75

Shed has gone all this week, with the newest SOTW ever and a very rare foray the 21st century with (gasp) 52-plate MG ZT.

Now, the ZT not have had the most illustrious or glamourous sire – the fuddy-duddy Rover 75 is not exactly an choice for a sports saloon and a independent MG Rover only divorced from BMW was hardly with funds for new models.

Yet the MG ZT is more than the sum of its parts. The Stevens styling (he’s the man who the original McLaren F1 don’tcha is clearly a shoestring effort, but a fair job of tidying up the 75, and Rover’s engineers, finally given a to do something sporty, proved the 75 could be turned into a sharp handler with relatively minor tweaks to the

The 2.5-litre KV6 engine took to the saloon role pretty too, mustering a respectable – good enough for a sprint to 60mph and a 140mph top It was eager and keen to rev,

Best of all, the ZT was far enough up the MG to (mostly) avoid falling the grubby mitts of the Barry and so, unlike its ZR and ZS siblings, the majority of ZTs so far largely escaped trial-by-modification.

Of course, if you really want a MG ZT you’ll have to go for the 4.6-litre V8, 260 model – but you’re not to find one of them for less a grand, and there are hardly any anyway.

It’s pretty to find a ZT 190 for this price, too most of a similar age and mileage to be fetching at least Ј2k. So a bargain of the century for one of the last-ever British high-volume performance to be produced, right?

Er, maybe. is a bit of a catch (well two, This particular MG, well-specced and reasonable mileage as it is, has at some been declared a category C although the vendor says the was purely cosmetic.

More ominously there is no history with the car.

But let us put you off – if you’re feeling or have a good eye for the oily then this MG could be a find. It’s a gamble, but go in with your eyes and this sporty slice of British motoring history well be a bit of a steal.
