Quick Drive: Mercedes SLS AMG

Let#8217;s be honest, this is the reason I took the journey London to Surrey for this Media event where I drove the SL 63 AMG and rode the smart The Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster is one of those that us gearheads long to off our #8220;to drive#8221; bucket

Frankly, Mercedes had some coming out with this car in the place, back in 2011, that it competes almost with heavy hitters the Ferrari 458 Italia, Lamborghini and Audi R8 GT. With the overall of its predecessor #8211; the Mercedes-McLaren SLR the SLS AMG had to be good.

Having been to see how it competes with the Lambo and first-hand for some time the last drive of the day was in the SLS Roadster.

Note: This #8220; Drive #8221; series is we get to drive a car, but don#8217;t it for long enough to provide an review. Any opinions or observations the car are based on a limited time (usually anywhere from a hour to a few hours) and normally in one situation (either in-city or or on a track, etc.)

The first I noticed after stepping the SLS AMG Roadster and putting it into is how much it didn#8217;t feel a competitor to the 458 Italia or R8 GT. The gearbox jerk around between it didn#8217;t feel like it was off to be going under 30 mph, and it make me cringe every I approached a speed hump. It feel like the supercar I was #8211; it#8217;s more of a GT car the Ferrari California or Aston DB9.

At least on the slow and busy roads I was driving it on.

But maybe the point. It certainly sounds it could go crazy at any moment. At low it sounds like a dragon is you to stop poking it with a Get on the throttle a bit more and now it#8217;s angry.

I love the sound car makes. Sadly, I never had the to hear it scream. The speed A3 motorway made sure I it under 100 mph, although the of effort the 6.3-liter 571 hp V8 needed to get to 100 mph it easy to blast up to speed in no at all.

Most of my hour or so in the SLS AMG was despite the bitterly cold Not because I prefer convertible but so I could hear the car#8217;s note more clearly. down a couple of the car#8217;s gears with the paddle and punching the throttle while through a tunnel is one of life#8217;s joys.

Top up, visibility is a bit limited anyway. Not I want to risk in a £201,475 especially when I#8217;m to being on the other side of the car road.) Luckily, not much of the wind got in at any speed; the wind along with the windows up (yes, I know it looks kept it pretty warm

The rotating knob to the driver#8217;s selects between Comfort, Sport+, and Manual mode. my limited time I decided to the MB engineers and threw it into most of the time, and although the in modes is noticeable, it still felt like a track Perhaps that#8217;s what the big button is for#8230;and a track.

I still would have more excitement in Sport+ punching the throttle though there#8217;s some hesitation depressing the pedal and the car taking I wasn#8217;t able to get that you into your seat#8221; unless I downshifted a few gears at speeds, then stepped on it.

The that I kept setting the control every time I to turn right wasn#8217;t For some reason, Merc decided to place the cruise lever in the same place the lever normally resides. The is lower than I#8217;m to.

It never became a safety luckily #8211; I always I hit the wrong lever as soon as I did it, and the brake as needed.

If you#8217;re for the Roadster, prices start at on-the-road. My tester was loaded up quite a few options including £1,025 carbon fiber mirrors and £2,995 CF trim, a leather and Alcantara-lined £340 wheel, an upgraded brake worth £8,140 (and work ,) a £5,055 sound and a few other bits that the total price for this car

But of course, if you do get the roadster instead of the you lose out on the best conversation the gullwing doors, created as a to the much-loved 300SL Gullwing.

I enjoyed driving this although not for the reasons I expected to. a good car to cruise around in, has power when you need it, and I can see how on the it could be a beast. And the sound#8230;oh wonderful sound.

I haven#8217;t the coupe yet, and I only the Roadster on the streets, but I#8217;m to find the connection between the SLS AMG and its competitors apart from on It doesn#8217;t feel like a 458, R8 GT or Gallardo LP560-4 in despite the horsepower numbers nearly identical. It wasn#8217;t to drive, it was comfortable the whole and never even hinted at out of hand, even when the control decided to kick in.

Interestingly, the SLS is cheaper than any of the options, and has significantly more Pretty typical for any vehicle an AMG badge.

I#8217;d love to get car out on the track to see how its personality changes pushed to the limit. Rest if that happens, you#8217;ll be about it here. Check out more pictures from my below.
