Project Car Hell, Fixer-Upper Supercars Edition: Ferrari 360 or Audi R8 V10. How good are your bodywork skills?

#013;

In the last installment of Project Car Hell. we went with a pair of early #8217;70s style Detroit forward-control custom vans. Those projects were cool (which we require) and hellishly difficult (which makes us very happy), but sometimes you just need to take on a somewhat more challenging project. Always wanted a high-performance European exotic, but didn#8217;t think you could afford one? Think again! Thanks to the miracle of insurance auctions, you can get a nearly obliterated slightly bent modern supercar for Hell Project prices. We#8217;ve scoured the listings of Insurance Auto Auctions and, after reluctantly skipping over this somewhat toasty Audi. we#8217;ve come up with a pair of projects that underwent very sudden price-tag reduction and subsequent tow-truck trips to the auctioneer#8217;s block. Let#8217;s check them out!#013;

The Audi R8 is quite a car, and it gets even better with the mighty 525-horse V10 engine. Top speed is just a hair under 194 mph, and you get Lamborghini soul with German attention to detail. You don#8217;t even want to know what a nice 2011 R8 V10 goes for, and you won#8217;t have to know— just buy this one with some minor collision damage in Southern California and you#8217;ll be well on your way to proper R8 ownership. It appears that the car slid along a guardrail for a while, which (fortunately) slowed it enough so that the tree didn#8217;t smash the front much beyond the windshield. Now, we#8217;ll admit that suspension parts for this aren#8217;t exactly available at your local Pick-N-Pull #8212; you won#8217;t see an R8 or a Lamborghini Gallardo at those places #8212; but consider this an opportunity to fabricate better chassis components! Likewise, body panels will be prohibitively expensive, so you#8217;ll need to develop some heavy-duty metal-bending skills, or adapt some other vehicles#8217; components… say, doesn#8217;t the Dodge Stealth have a front end that looks a lot like the R8#8242;s? The good news is that the engine looks like it ought to be intact, though the engine cover is labeled #8220;STUCK#8221; in the photographs. How hard could it be?#013;

Much as we admire the R8, we can#8217;t help but think that there#8217;s no point in getting an Italian-German supercar when you can just go ahead and get a pure Italian one. The Ferrari 360 has an all-aluminum space-frame chassis, a 400-hp mid-mounted V8, and mean-looking scoops on every possible surface. They#8217;re also painfully costly… but not for you, because the Hell Garage Demons have found this 1999 Ferrari 360 in Southern California. and all it needs is complete replacement a little TLC to get it back on the road. Granted, it#8217;s got some body damage. Actually, it#8217;s in at least three separate pieces . thanks to what must have been a very memorable wreck for everyone involved, but we#8217;d say that at least 95 percent of the car (by weight) is still present. And, hey, the engine looks just fine! If you weren#8217;t locked in the Hell Garage with this thing, maybe you#8217;d want to extract the engine and drop it into, say, an Alfa Romeo Spider. In fact, what you#8217;ll need to do is restore it, and that#8217;s going to be about 97 percent as much work as just building a 360 from scratch. The results will be worth it, though!#013;
