Thr Peugeot 607 was launched in 1999, to replace the 605. It used its predecessor’s chassis but had an all-new, more modern look layout. The motor range – 2.2 and 3.0 petrol, and 2.2 diesel – were completely new.

Equipment levels were also high, with all models getting climate control, CD player, electric windows, airbags, anti-lock braking system and central locking as traditional.

However, since it began selling executive vehicles in the 1970s, Peugeot has always struggled to succeed and the Peugeot 607 has continued this trend. In most European markets outside of France, sales are only a tiny fraction of those of the BMW 5-series and Mercedes-Benz E-class. In its home sphere, it is often chosen for official usage, particularly as Renault’s Vel Satis is considered too unconventional. Motoring journalists such as Jeremy Clarkson disliked the Peugeot 607.

They claimed it had handling that was not up to Peugeot’s usual good standards. Clarkson even claimed it was the worst vehicle ever made.

The Peugeot 607 was restyled in 2004, most notable modifications being the new front end and the 2. 7 Hdi V6 motor motor, capable of more than 200 bhp, and mated to a new 6-speed automatic gearbox, which is now also available on the V6 petrol model.

Citroen C6

It is inspired by the Citroen C6 Lignage prototype which was first shown at the Geneva Motor Show in the spring of 1999, but differs from the concept car’s look-and-feel in minor details. At the time it was hoped that the Citroen C6 would go into production by the end of 2001 as the replacement for the aging XM, which was first manufactured rear in 1989. The XM did cease production in early 2001 but the first Citroen C6 rolled off the production line almost four years later.

It is powered by either a 3. 0L ES9 V6 producing 211 hp (155 Kw) or a 2. 7 L V6 Hdi diesel producing 204 hp (150 Kw). It is aimed as a stylish alternative to executive vehicles like the BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-class. Despite its hatchback shape, the vehicle is a fastback and has a classical cargo (and a original to the Citroen C6 concave back window) such as the one the Citroen CX used to have.

Citroen hopes one of its main selling points will be its high-tech technology, which contains a head-up screen, lane departure warning system, xenon directional headlamps, Hydractive suspension with electronically controlled springing and damping, and a back spoiler which automatically adjusts to speed and braking.

The Citroen C6 is the first vehicle to obtain four stars in the pedestrian test rating of Euroncap thanks to the inventive layout, where the bonnet pops up a little if a person/animal is hit and skids over the vehicle.

French president Jacques Chirac has chosen the Citroen C6 as his official vehicle, and has been using a pre-series vehicle before the model was presented.

By using a Citroen C6, Chirac follows a long tradition of French presidents using Citroen vehicles.
