Peugeot 407

(

2004 -)

The Peugeot 407 is produced since 2004. It is available as a coupe, sedan or estate.

It is available with four petrol and three diesel engines. The entry-level 1.6-liter turbo diesel is surprisingly smooth and strong. The star buy would be a 2.0-liter turbo diesel, or a 2.0-liter petrol. Both have enough urge for everyday driving.

It is worth mentioning that in this car diesel engines are more refined than the petrol units.

The 407 has a firm suspension, that cannot cope well with poor surface. Things get better as the speed improves, however the ride quality cannot match the class leaders. Yet the new Peugeot has a good grip through corners, but it’s far from agile and steering is short on feedback.

The Peugeot 407 is well isolated from the outside noises. There are barely any wind and road noises at the motorway speeds. Petrol engines are also inaudible at cruise speed and only make themselves heard, when the revs are pushing to the redline.

There is some noise coming from the diesel units, but it shouldn’t make you feel uncomfortable.

Residual values of this car are only average. The Peugeot 407, especially the diesel-powered cars, are cheaper to run than most rivals. Furthermore it has servicing intervals nearly twice longer than most of it’s rivals. So it is a very competitive auto, but unfortunately residual values of the 407 are only average. If you think about reselling your car in the future, avoid the V6 model, as it is unlikely to be popular.

The engines use proven technology so should be trouble-free.

The new 407’s interior has a higher-quality feel comparing with the Peugeot 406. All of the major controls are well positioned, but the centre console has a number of buttons that are confusing to use.

One of the drawback’s of the Peugeo t 407 is a poor driving position. Despite the steering wheel adjustments, driver’s seat won’t be comfortable for everyone.

At the back there is enough space for three adults, however the headroom will be restricted for taller ones, but kneeroom is generous. The boot is well shaped and large enough. Unfortunately there is no hatchback option of the new Peugeot 407 and the sedan cannot match it’s versatility.

The 407 comes with twin front, side and curtain airbags as standard. Furthermore there is a knee airbag under the steering wheel. Pricier models have side airbags in the back.

An optional safety pack includes pre-tensioning seatbelts and laminated side glass to prevent thieves. An ABS, electronic stability control, alarm and deadlocks are standard across the range.

All models of the Peugeot 407 are fitted with a climate control as standard. Top of the range versions include cruise control, leather upholstery and xenon headlamps. Parking sensor is optional on the SE trim.

Production of the Peugeot 407 still continues.

Advantages: Coupe-like styling stands out from the crowd. Fine diesel engines.

Disadvantages: No hatchback option restricts versatility. Ride is never as complaint as class best.

Verdict: Individual looks, but quality isn’t great.
