Coupe V6

Advantages: True 4-seater coupe, Many used bargains around

Disadvantages: Need a garage to keep it looking spotless!

I am about to buy a 406 Coupe V6 and have recently test driven all three variations of manual engine. (March 2001)

The 2.0 16v drives nicely, is powerful and quick but with a typically revvy 16v sound and takes some work to get the best out of the engine. The noise is actually rather unpleasant but those who are moving from a hot hatch or small engine car will be right at home and will be very impressed by the power. However, the 0-60 stats say it all and I wouldn#39;t advise you to buy the 2.0 16v when the same money will buy you something better elsewhere.

The 3.0 V6 gives a superb ride. Having test driven both the 194bhp and 210bhp engines it is hard to tell if the new Coupe engine betters the old. Certainly driving them on the road, you are unlikely to notice the difference. I would expect that if you took them on the track the difference would tell. The 0-60 stats do show that the new engine is quicker off the mark at 7.7 secs.

The most impressive thing, however, was how quiet the car is. The V6 is smooth, effortless and oh so quiet. Combine that with a seperately JBL amplified sound system and here is a car with real refinement.

Drive it conservatively and a gorgeous ride is to be had, put your foot down and the V6 roars to life with enough power to overtake easily.

The real reason to buy this Coupe however has to be its looks. They are simply stunning. The only reason I would buy a Peugeot is to have the Pininfarina badge on the car.

On top of that you get a true 4-seater coupe which will seat 2 adults in the back comfortably (I am not saying you would want to cross Europe with two adults in the back!) The spec is top of the range and now comes with satellite navigation as standard on the V6.

The V6 new costs around Ј26,500 but look around and you will find a second hand bargain. The new Coupe (SE spec as standard but not badged as SE) started around the 99T-00W registration and you can pick them up for Ј20,000. With the o

lder coupe you need to ensure it is the SE spec (which gives you leather seats and electric adjustments etc.) and a V6 will set you back from around Ј11,000 for a high miler up to Ј17,000-Ј18,000 for a perfect example.

This is without a doubt the best looking, most practical (it uses tried and tested Peugeot 406 engine and electrics), 4-seater coupe around and with the second hand market at an all time low, there are some real bargains to be had.

You have to think that with its good looks and prestige badge it will also hold its value and be a real classic in years to come.

Continued. (February 2002)

I thought I would update this opinion in light of my having bought and driving a 1999 406 Coupe 3.0V6 SE.

One of the curiosities of this particular model is that it is not sought after by the trade since it has high value and little demand. For me though, I knew what I was looking for – a high mileage 1998/1999 car in Blue with Black leather. Using a contact in the trade I managed to pick one up at auction for just under Ј9000.

With 60,000 miles on the clock it has seen some tarmac but being a V6 this shouldn#39;t be a worry.

In the event the car has performed beautifully. It is due for its first MOT in June and with an aftermarket warranty (about Ј200 a year which covers everything including ABS and Air-Con.) I feel confident that there won#39;t be any surprises.

Having done about 5000 miles in the car I have got to know its limits. In town it drives quietly and predictably. On the open road it tends to wallow and the steering is too light and doesn#39;t feed back very nicely – it is not a nice car to throw around tight country lanes!

But on the motorway it is gorgeous. It cruises happiest at above the speed limit and will accelerate up in the region of its top speed with little effort.

I have had four people in the car comfortably but not five as the middle back seat is not padded for a p

My overall verdict is this. I look forward to seeing my car, driving it and driving others in it. It is a stunning looking car which does turn heads and is still slightly unusual compared to the herds of BMW#39;s dominating the road in this class.

The only other car I would compare it to is the BMW 8 Series, but I put a 7 foot christmas tree in the Coupe at Christmas and a flat packed double bed from Ikea in it last week. Show me a car which compares to that!

This is a car which I will be sad to see the back of.
