Obtaining Transmission Fault Codes

revised 10-22-06 (corrected typo)

There is a way to get the O/D-Off light to flash transmission diagnostic codes. Here is the procedure from the 1994-1995 Nissan shop manual. I’m not sure what other years it may work with, it didn’t work for my 97 Quest (look further down the page for an alternate method which does work).

1. Gear selector in P, turn ignition key on (but don’t start

engine). O/D-Off light should come on for about 2 seconds (or blink

if fault stored). Turn key off but don’t lock

2. Move gear selector to D

3. Press hold O/D switch button in

4. Turn ignition key on, keep holding O/D switch in

5. Move gear selector to 2, keep holding O/D switch button

6. Release O/D switch button

7. Press release O/D switch button once

8. Move gear selector to 1

Here is an alternate method which does work on 96 97 Villagers/Quest, thanks to Bret C.

1) Drive car and bring up to normal operating temperature.

2) Place in Park, and turn off engine.

3) Turn ignition switch to On (do not start car)

4) O/D light should come on for 2 seconds then go out.

5) Place shifter to D.

6) Turn ignition switch to OFF

7) Push and Hold the O/D ON/OFF switch, then turn Ignition switch to ON.

8) Wait at least two seconds (while still holding the O/D switch), then shift to 2

all be short flashes. IF one of these flickers is longer than the

others, that will indicate a problem with that device.

10 short flashes: self-diagnosis o.k. no faults

1st flicker is longer than others: vehicle speed pulse generator circuit shorted or disconnected

Nissan Quest

2nd flicker is longer than others: vehicle speed sensor is shorted or disconnected

3rd flicker is longer than others: Throttle position sensor circuit is shorted or disconnected

4th flicker is longer than others: Shift solenoid valve A circuit is shorted or disconnected

5th flicker is longer than others: Shift solenoid valve B circuit is shorted or disconnected

6th flicker is longer than others: Overrun clutch solenoid valve circuit is shorted or disconnected

7th flicker is longer than others: Torque converter clutch solenoid valve circuit is shorted or disconnected

8th flicker is longer than others: ATF Fluid temp sensor circuit is disconnected or A/T control unit power source circuit is damaged

9th flicker is longer than others: Engine speed signal circuit is shorted or disconnected

10th flicker is longer than others: Line pressure solenoid valve circuit is shorted or disconnected

Steady display of long flash pulses:

1. battery power is low

2. battery has been disconnected for a long time

3. battery terminals reversed

O/D light does not come on: Inhibitor switch, trans gear selector switch-O/D or TPS circuit is disconnected or A/T control unit is damaged.
