Toyota Auris

The Toyota Auris range is powered by a choice of two petrol engines, one diesel and a petrol-electric hybrid .

The entry-level 1.33-litre petrol has 99bhp and the 1.6-litre petrol 130bhp.The 89bhp 1.4-litre diesel has average fuel consimption of more than 60mpg.

The Toyota Auris comes with a five-year warranty. Every Auris comes with front, side and curtain airbags, as well as an airbag to guard the knees of the driver.

All versions have deadlocks and marked parts. The Auris’s unusual dash is designed to put every control within easy reach. There’s storage behind the bridged centre console, and there’s a wide range of seating adjustment.

The flat floor of the Toyota Auris’ cabin allows the cabin to cope with three rear passengers and the rear seat backrests recline.

The trim levels on the Toyota Auris are T2, TR and SR, with the most basic unique to the 1.3-litre petrol engine and the SR available only with the 1.6-litre.

T2 get air conditioning, electric front windows, remote locking and a CD player while TR models add alloy wheels and climate control. SR versions have a more sporty look. Hybrid models have a unique two-tier trim structure.

The Toyota Auris Hybrid has a five-year/100,000 mile warranty and an eight year/100,000-mile hybrid battery warranty.

It is built exclusively at TMUK’s Burnaston factory in the UK and the 1.8-litre VVT-i engine is supplied by TMUK at Deeside in North Wales.

The maximum output of the system is 134bhp while average fuel economy and carbon dioxide emissions are 74.3mpg and 89g/km respectively.

There are four driving modes on the Toyota Auris Hybrid including on-demand EV, ECO, and POWER.

Toyota’s introduction of the Auris Hybrid marks the arrival of its Hybrid Synergy Drive.

By the early part of the next decade Toyota aims to offer all its models with Hybrid Synergy Drive.

The Toyota Auris Hybrid has been designed for the European market.

The system’s 1.8-litre VVT-i petrol engine and electric motor give nought to 62mph acceleration in 11.4 seconds on its way to a top speed of 112mph.

The Auris Hybrid returns an official fuel consumption figure of 74.3mpg which gives a possible range of up to 735 miles on a single tank of fuel. Carbon dioxide emissions start from 89g/km.

The exterior of Auris Hybrid differs from the rest of the range in that several new styling details have been added while in the cabin there are several hybrid-specific instruments and controls.

There are more than 1,750 individual components in an Auris Hybrid, of which 395 – about one quarter – are specific to the model.

Seven new production processes had to be designed and implemented, such as the installation of the sub-battery in the luggage compartment and the main battery behind the rear seats, connection of the high-voltage cable and installation of the 1.8 VVT-i engine.

To help prepare for the challenge of building the Hybrid, Toyota team members from Deeside travelled to Japan to learn about production of the Hybrid Synergy Drive Powertrain.

Workers from Burnaston also spent time at the Tsutsumi plant in Japan, home of Prius production, and at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky in the USA, where the hybrid Camry is built.

The introduction of the Auris Hybrid has called for a redesign of the of the offline inspection area. Due to the new car’s silent running in EV mode, new safety measures have been introduced, including a new highway code for TMUK members as they move around the plant.

The Burnaston test track has been revised so that Auris Hybrid can be put through its paces in its different driving modes. Changes to the test track also enable Auris Hybrid’s regenerative braking system to be checked.
