Reader Question

Austin, for the great advice you give it has been extremely useful. I you input on this. I have a Oldsmobile Alero, 4 cyl, Engine with 103k on it. Two weeks ago I tried to start my car in the and after 2 or 3 attempts it finally

I immediately noticed that the light was flashing and the engine was very rough.

By the way this has happened to me before and my car usually right away. I let it warm for 5 and when I switched to drive the car was not as usual. When I stepped on the it seemed like the gas was not getting

I drove it less than 3 to work and at lunch I decided to it to Firestone for a complete check up is also less than 3 away.

I dropped the car and an hour the Technician called me and he said the ignition module and ignition went bad, because of two of the spark plugs got damaged. estimate to replace the above parts was $777. I was shocked but did not many options at that I asked them about the and he said 12 month/12k miles for and labor. I approved the estimate and up the car in the evening.

The next day the check engine came on again, it was not flashing but I to take it to the shop again. said that since the car was running on 2 cylinders it could been that there still fumes in the system and recommended that I drive the car for a of more days and the light come off.

They reset the computer but two days the light came on I took it back and this the said that the catalytic went bad and the shop manager me an estimate of 640 dollars to repair it. I was furious when I heard and I demanded an explanation, the manager the they performed all the necessary and it was impossible for them to diagnose a like that without the

I asked them if they the sensors and he said the those working fine.

I believe my car was not diagnosed properly and although have offered not to charge me for and reduced the estimate to 400 I still they should take for the repair. What do you think Could they#8217;ve done a diagnosis even without the

You did not say anything the starting issue still there? I am assuming they DID fix the starting problem. If so, then I their original diagnosis was correct then, right?

There is a possibility the catalytic was damaged with the engine poorly and you continuing to drive it it was running bad. It could caused too much fuel exhaust to inter the converter. I just drive the car for a while and see if the goes out and stays out.

take it on the freeway and really get in the gas pedal and try to blow out what carbon build up that be in the converter and see what happens.

I am not sure I would spend to replace the converter if nothing is wrong. I would probably get diagnosis, preferably from a in a month or two if the light is still on.

Let me know what happens
