1991 CITROEN BX 19 GTi 8V

“Discreetly different, noticeably better.” was the way the BX was described when compared to it#39;s contemporaries. The BX was Citroen#39;s contender to the mid-size family car sector, utilising the traditional hydro-pneumatic suspension and benefiting from lightweight, high tensile steel body panels.

The BX was styled by the famous Marcello Gandini, designer of the Lamborghini#39;s Miura and Countach and many practical cars as well, like the first-generation BMW 5-series, the Innocenti Mini, and the Renault Supercinq, successor of the original Renault 5. The Lancia Stratos supercar was another Gandini design. So, the BX comes from an excellent blood line! In fact, Gandini drove a GTi 16 Valve as his personal car!

It is finished in Platinum Grey metallic (Gris Dolmen) and complemented with superb black Mistral Velour interior. The interior really is in excellent condition. There are no tears of holes!

It is powered by a 1.9 8-valve petrol engine and mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Combining typical Citroen comfort and more than adequate performance, this is somewhat of a gentleman#39;s cruiser! It was a hot hatch of the day with 123 mph top speed, 8.3 seconds 0-60 and up to 37 mpg on the motorway.

In fact, on a recent trip to Wales I got 37.8 mpg, at the legal limit. It can go a long way on the 60 litre tank. The suspension is quite firm on the GTi but still a delight.

It is really spacious and the boot is huge, the rear seats also fold flat in hatch back fashion. It is a great tourer, it really loved the 130 kph cruising in France recently!

The same engine was also used in the 205 GTi and you know what great fun that car was!

The GTi trim level sports all-round electric windows (with #39;one touch#39; up or down driver#39;s window), electric mirrors, tilt/slide electric sunroof, front fog lamps (all of which work correctly I hasten to add) and the added stlying of a front bumper splitter and rear spoiler. It also has central locking and sunscreens in the rear parcel shelf.

It even has a rear power point! Such luxury. -)

There is an undamaged accessoire sunroof deflector fitted. It wears the rare, correct period GTi wheeltrims, these are securely fastened, not my thing but hey, I don#39;t want to loose one! The paintwork is in fine condition, bearing only a few blemishes, after all, it is not new! As shown in the pictures, there are a few corrosion bits around the windscreen, which was on the #39;list#39; for repair soon.

There is no sign of any other corrosion anywhere!

In the last two years it has had a lot of attention. The previous owner had spent £600 on a service with cambelt and water pump change, just before I bought it. In additon the fuel lines from the tank to the engine were replaced as well, also the fuel filter. This was done by Citroen specialists Chevronic.

The front exhaust pipe was also changed.

Before that, all suspension spheres were removed and regassed to the correct pressures. One of the rear trailing arms had a tell-tale lean and so the arm bearing was renewed. Even the sunroof drain tubes were cleared, thus there are no leaks here! It tilts and slides like it should. In fact, everything in the car works!

Heated rear window, rear washer and wiper. heater is powerful for winter driving. I believe it was one of the first cars to have ABS.

In my care for just over a year, it had more than a £1000 spent on it. Fuel pressure regulator replaced, high quality plugs, distributor cap and ignition leads, new battery, new radiator hose fabricated (fresh coolant, obviously), TWO oil and filter changes, front brake lines replaced, hydraulic return lines fabricated, gear selector linkage replaced, new wiper spray arm. I reckon this car is now sorted!

Don#39;t you? From my records and the previous owner, more than £1700 alone, not included the suspension work and the rear trailing arm bearings. So, probably about £2000 in the last 7000 miles, about two years.

Citroen BX

The car is MOT#39;d until 17 April 2014 and is taxed until the end of February 2014. I continue to use and enjoy the car most days as I believe it is much better to use it than to let it stand. In fact, any excuse to drive it!

So, the mileage will increase somewhat.

What more can I tell you? Oh yes, there are only 23 GTi#39;s still on the road! It is a real shame as it is such a delight to drive.

This one deserves a loving home, someone who can appreciate something special. There really is nothing new to compare. I have just been to Gatwick and back in the rain to pick someone up. Heavy suitcases, three 6 foot + adults and it just shrugs all that weight off, lifts itself up and glides along.

I will really miss it!
