A curious mix of intelligent high technology engineering and a very average supermini. In its quest to drive down emissions and improve economy Nissan has developed a very clever, exotically specified version of its 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. It#39;s got a de-coupling supercharger, stop-start, on demand auxiliaries, low-friction internal coatings and uses the Miller combustion cycle at low revs for maximum economy.

It#39;s even got a more slippery body to help it cut through the air more efficiently. All very impressive, but Nissan#39;s popped it under the bonnet of its very average Micra, which is among the least impressive superminis available today.

Is it any good?

Looked at purely with a mind on economy the Micra DIG-S is right at the top of a particularly green tree. Returning mpg and CO 2 figures to rival the best diesels, the supercharged 1.2-litre DIG-S can manage 68.9mpg on the official combined consumption cycle while emitting just 95g/km. The engine is the highlight, with its percussive three-cylinder throb enjoyable, though it does need plenty revs to produce its best.

The supercharger here does increase performance, with a 0-62mph time of 11.3 seconds, but the DIG-S Micra isn#39;t about traffic-light credibility, not least because you#39;ll be sitting with the engine idle thanks to the stop-start system.

It#39;s all about efficiency, which given the Micra delivers little in the driving stakes is no bad thing. There#39;s little fun behind the wheel, so it#39;s best to use your time trying to maximise your economy. The interior#39;s similarly lacklustre, with the cabin lacking any flair and constructed from some rather inexpensive looking and feeling materials.

If you want some joy in your supermini then look elsewhere, but if you want maximum mileage from it then the Micra#39;s worth considering.

Should I call the bank manager?

While the Micra DIG-S cannot quite match the very best diesel superminis at the pumps it wins on its list price and equipment. Diesel is more expensive at the pumps too, and the DIG-S#39;s performance is among the best compared to its frugal rivals. Nissan hasn#39;t confirmed pricing yet, but expect it to start from £11,000.

A clever, economical engine that#39;s saddled with a very average car to haul around, the Micra DIG-S impresses with its excellent fuel consumption and emissions figures, but falls short in every other area. If economy is your prime reason for buying then it#39;s worth consideration, but we#39;d take some penalty at the pumps and buy any of its rivals, which offer a far more appealing all-round ownership proposition.
