Man held as baby escapes injury in crash on Carlisle street

Last updated at 16:02, Tuesday, 19 November 2013

A woman was taken to hospital with a possible spinal injury after a crash involving a baby and a suspected drink driver.

The man was taken into police custody and the woman, who witnesses said was in the car with a young child, was treated at Carlisle’s Cumberland Infirmary.

The child was thought to have escaped injury in the collision that brought one of the city’s roads to a standstill. Neighbours have spoken of their shock after a quiet evening was shattered by “a massive smash”.

Police said the crash happened on Upperby Road last night (Monday) when a Citroen ZX, driven by a 62-year-old man from the city, was in collision with two parked cars a Nissan Micra and a Vauxhall Astra and ended up on its roof.

A Citroen C1, driven by a woman, 30, from Carlisle, then became caught up in the crash.

A police spokesman said the woman suffered possible neck injuries and was taken to hospital for scans.

A North West Ambulance Service spokeswoman said that they were called to the scene just after 7.35pm and confirmed that a child had been travelling in the car.

The man in the first car was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and taken into custody. The force said this afternoon that he had been charged with drink driving and driving without due care.

Emma Short, a 38-year-old hospital helpdesk worker who lives across the road, rushed out to help with her husband, Alan. She said she had opened a window after hearing a huge noise.

“I thought it was a massive smash,” she said. “It was awful. I looked out of the front door and I saw the overturned car.

“I could just hear screaming and people shouting. My husband is a first aider and luckily he was off work. He ran across the road.”

Mr Short, a miller, added: “His car was overturned and he’d just got out. A couple from two doors up were standing with him.

“I checked the car to see if there was anybody else in it, but there wasn’t. That’s when I went down to the other car.”

Mr Short said another neighbour had got into the other car and was holding the woman’s neck.

“I looked in,” said Mr Short. “That’s when I realised it was our friend. It was a bit of a shock.”

He said the woman had a one-year-old baby with her. Paramedics had told them the child was okay.

Mr Short called his wife over to reassure the woman. He added that residents were concerned about road safety on this stretch, saying there had been a string of crashes in the last year.

Fire crews were sent from fire stations in the east and west of the city to help with the emergency response.

They used cutting tools to remove the roof on the woman’s car to help get her out.

TUESDAY, NOV 19 UPDATE: Thomas Irving, 62, of Sunnymeade, Carlisle, has been charged with drink driving and driving without due care and will appear at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court on December 6.
