LAND ROVER background and news

Land Rover Environmental Protection Credentials

As of March 2013, and taking 2007 as a baseline year, Land Rover has cut waste to landfills by 37% and water use per vehicle by 13%. Weight has also been drastically reduced in certain models, particularly in the 2013 Range Rover, which sheds 400kg from the preivous model due to an aluminium monocoque. 85% of materials used in the new Range Rover are recyclable, too, and leather for all models is supplied by Bridge of Weir from a self-sustaining tannery.

Transport logistics have also come under scrutiny, and lightweight trailers with an aerodynamic design have been introduced to the fleet. Transporting engines from Spain via sea rather than land also saved 924 tonnes of carbon dioxide in 2011. Currently only 5% of recycled vehicle components go to landfill sites.

With a view to future markets, Jaguar Land Rover has plug-in hybrid prototype versions of the Range Rover Sport and XJ saloon, which are the result of an Ј800 million investment aimed eventually at producing production versions. The Range Rover, in particular, is a diesel-hybrid that emits 89g/km carbon dioxide and achieves 85mpg. Potential range is 690 miles.

Manufacturer History

Land Rover is a 4×4, SUV and all-terrain vehicle manufacturer, based in Solihull, West Midlands, England.

Originally the term Land Rover referred to one specific vehicle, a pioneering civilian all-terrain utility vehicle launched on 30 April 1948, but was later used as a brand for several distinct models, all capable of four-wheel drive.

Land Rover is considered as a British icon in the motoring scene.

It is one of the longest surviving four-wheel drive brands, coming in a close second to Jeep.

Land Rover was originally just one crude vehicle – an all-terrain, utility machine, styled after a military vehicle, but aimed at post-war civilian use.

The first Land Rover was designed in 1948 in the United Kingdom by Maurice Wilks, chief designer at the British car company Rover on his farm in Newborough, Anglesey.

The Land Rover brand developed its range of four-wheel drive under a succession of owners, including BMW. In 2000, the company was sold by BMW to the Ford Motor Company. In June 2008, Land Rover operations were sold to Tata Motors.

Land Rover’s vehicles are well known for having a reputation for longevity and reliability in the toughest conditions.

Land Rover once advertised that 75 per cent of all vehicles ever built are still in use.

The early choice of colour was dictated by military surplus supplies of aircraft cockpit paint, so early vehicles only came in various shades of light green.

Land Rover has modernised its range today.

These new four-wheel-drive are getting more and more good-looking and pleasant to drive.

There are four models available with the flagship of the brand being the Defender due to its military history in the brand.

Then there is the Range Rover, the very impressive and luxurious SUV with the following two being the more conventional Freelander and Discovery.
