2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overview

New/Notable:

Refresh for 2014 adding a new diesel engine option, exterior and interior styling changes, and a new transmission

New Summit trim is now the highest trim level

Choice of three different four-wheel drive systems

Getting its first touch up since a 2011 redesign, the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee returns with a few styling changes and some exciting new developments under the skin as well.

On the outside, the changes for 2014 are minor. The Grand Cherokee’s bumper has been slightly raised, the headlights shrink slightly, and the front grille has been dialed back a bit. Keeping up with times, daytime LED running lights are now standard and the fog light housings have grown.

Jeep also says that they have improved rear visibility by making changes to the rear liftgate which is a welcome change. 17-inch wheels come standard, with an array of 18- and 20-inch wheels optional.

Mechanical changes are highlighted by a new eight-speed automatic transmission, which replaces the outgoing five- and six-speed automatics and improves efficiency, and a newly available diesel engine. The base engine remains a 290-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 making 260 pounds-feet of torque. Also available is a 360-horsepower, 5.7-liter V-8 which makes 390 pounds-feet of torque with cylinder deactivation to improve fuel economy.

Rounding out the engine options is the new 240-horsepower, turbo diesel 3.0-liter V-6 which makes a more than ample 420 pounds-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but those looking for a more capable Grand Cherokee can choose between three distinct four-wheel drive systems.

The new eight-speed transmission has improved fuel economy to 17/25 mpg city/highway with the base V-6 and 14/22 mpg with the V-8 (figures for RWD models). Topping the line is the new diesel engine, which pushes fuel economy all the way up to 22/30 mpg city/highway for RWD models.

Inside, the Grand Cherokee’s interior, which was a big strength of the redesigned SUV, has been further sharpened with a new 7-inch customizable LCD instrument panel and a revamped dashboard to house the 5- or 8.4-inch touch screen that houses the Uconnect system’s controls. A USB port, dual zone automatic climate control, Uconnect, Bluetooth connectivity, and keyless entry/access are standard. Leather upholstery and powered front seats are optional, as are heated and ventilated front seats and a wood and leather steering wheel.

Besides the federally mandated front airbags, the 2014 Grand Cherokee also adds front side-impact, side curtain, and driver’s knee airbags standard, along with antilock brakes, traction control, and an electronic stability system. There is also plenty of available safety technology, including front/rear parking sensors, a backup camera, blind spot warning, rear cross path detection, and a predictive forward collision system.
