Space Star 1.3GLX – 6 years on

So – we got our Space Star when it had just had the colt prefix dropped from it’s name. We bought in December 2000 – a nice little metallic green 1.3GLX from our local main dealer (Marshalls in Cambridge). We paid a fair price and haggled and got a good deal.

At the time there were no special offers – but it didn’t matter as they had the car in stock and were keen to mee their monthly target.

Anyway, we p/ex’ed our old fiat and away we went.

Plenty of space inside for us and the dog (at the time it was only one) – and even space with 2 dogs and a toddler now – it’s been great on that front.

Where has it not been so great. Well – servicing costs were a tad expensive to be honest. Main dealers always are – but the major service of Ј250 for oil, plugs, filters, brake fluid, coolant and a general check over was expensive.

On the whole, the dealer servicing was expensive, but they always are. They did an OK job, but the parts in my opinion were overly expensive – and we had a lot of niggly warranty claims for bits of trim that fell off etc. They were all dealt with – but it was tiresome.

The paintwork is also a little soft in my opinon, but that’s water based paints for you – the touch up is effortless though – but I noticed that bird lime was remarkably reactive with the paint – all resolved though.

And – it’s not *that* cheap to insure really – but then it’s not that common and it’s japanese which weights it somewhat.

Where has it been good? Fuel economy – stunning to be honest. We just returned from a run to Paris and back and got 52.1mpg – in a petrol – at 70mph – that’s almost diesel territory!

Tyres – replaced all 4 at 50k miles – not because they were worn to the limit – but they were 5 years old, and were getting a bit noisy (they wouldn’t have been my chosen brand supplied with the car anyway). Comfort is pretty good (all the way back from paris with no back ache etc) – and once we started using a local garage in place of the main dealer – the work has been to an equal standard but 1/4 the price (even using the original parts!).

On the whole – it’s a 4.5* car – the only thing I could want would be a diesel version which would accelerate ever slo slightly faster – but then ours is only 1299cc – so it’s to be expected.

We are really happy with it – even though they are now discontinued – I’d have another one – just wouldn’t use the main dealer unless there was a major issue – as they are dead easy to maintain (as our local garge attests).
