Small wonder than that many might think the company is lying dormant. Truth however is, the Japanese company has been fairly active of late. Admittedly, the said activity has happened back home in Japan, but it does have significant implications for Mitsubishi’s plans for India.

It all started with a new plan, code named Jump 2013. As per this new plan, the company will be launching a host of new vehicles, some by 2013 and others by 2015, of which the most significant will be this hatchback named Mirage, which you see on these pages.

Although the car was shown in concept form earlier (as a Global Small Car concept), now the Japanese car maker has revealed a production version on the eve of the Tokyo Motor Show.

The Mirage boasts very compact dimensions; at 3,710mmlong, it is just a shade longer than the hotselling Hyundai i10. This definitely ensures that it will qualify for the under 4m tax sops in India. However it is less wide than the Korean hatch, at 1,665mm.

Lookwise, it has of course been toned down from the concept car but continues to look smart. Also, unlike most of its contemporaries, the car’s outline clearly shows a jellybean shape rather than tall boy styling. What also make it stand apart from the crowd are its smallish headlamps and that unique two-tier grille.

Nonetheless, the lines have been kept such that the car looks simple and straight cut, much like the Toyota Etios Liva.

As is evident from the image, interiors too have been kept simple and functional. While range-topping variants will get a climate control system, lesser variants will have to make do with a simple air-con.

There will of course be a music system but no controls for it on the steering wheel.Nor will there be Bluetoothtelephony. Instrumentation will comprise a large speedo, and tacho in top-end models. Mistubishi is also confi dent that the car will accommodate five adults comfortably.

What will be the car’s real USP though will be its fuel efficiency. Indeed, its makers claim a figure as surreal as 30kmpl! To achieve this, the Mirage will use a 1-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, in conjunction with fuel saving technologies like an automatic Start- Stop system and brake energy regeneration.

Power and torque ratings of this engine though are yet to be revealed. While internationally the car will be offered with a CVT, in India expect it to get only a manual transmission. There is also speculation of a 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol enginebut for now only the 1-litre unit has been confi rmed by the company.

Production of the Mirage is slated to start in March 2012 at the company’s Thailand facility.

In addition to the Mirage, Mitsubishi will also launch eight EVs by 2015 and a clutch of hybrids vehicles in 2013.
