The Anniversary Mirage edition in Bling-Bling Blossom Purple

by John Lindgren

2010 was the debut of the first eco-car in the Thai Kingdom when the Nissan March (in Europe named Nissan Micra) was rolled out. We have one in our garage, we call it the Marshmellow.

A super compact 1.2 liter petrol engine, stick-shift, air-con, power-windows and a solid AM/FM CD radio. (What more do you need?) Fun to drive and easy to park, too. Notwithstanding the active way we drive our “March-mellow,” we still manage 17-18 kpl. If you prefer a slower Eco-car driving style or light step on the accelerator you should be able to achieve circa 20 kpl.

Last year after March came Mirage, Mitsubishi#8217;s Eco car. The Mirage is a “global compact car” produced at a new Mitsubishi Motors Thailand factory in Laem Chabang industrial estate. This automotive factory is the largest MMC plant and export hub outside of Japan.

But I still don#8217;t know if ECO stands for economy or ecology? Maybe it#8217;s both! In order to celebrate the first anniversary of Mirage in Thailand (and sell more cars) “Mitsu” Thailand recently launched a Mirage special model “Bloom Edition”.

Voila! Mitsubishi Mirage Bloom. The design language? Cute, tight and a tad boxy with four wheels in each corner a la MINI. The front with the short nose and the narrow, slim front grill does not really impress me.

But the side view! The thin A-pillar and the wide C-pillar. And the rear with the over-sized cool, sporty roof spoiler, very Mirage. Plus a fancy “Bloom Edition” emblem on the tailgate.

Pattaya Today tests the Anniversary Bloom edition painted in “Blossom Purple”. A strong, unique color maybe not for the fainthearted.

Step inside: Since this is the top of-the-line version it comes with premium-grade fabric, purple accented seat (just in case the blossom purple paint job is not enough). For the driver, a three-spoke leather wrapped steering wheel with silver decor. Thanks to its boxy shape the cabin is spacious, especially the rear seats.

The infotainment-center is comprehensive, including DVD/CD/MP3 UBS and Bluetooth, plus a 7-inch touch screen with navigation system. More goodies! The Start/Stop engine button and Smart Key System.

No more hassle.  Just touch the door and press the start button.

Mitsubishi Mirage is propelled by a three-cylinder, 12 valve, 78 horsepower MIVEC engine mated to a smooth CTV automatic gear box. It runs on 95 petrol, E10 and E20. Safety features include front driver and passenger airbags plus ABS and Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD).

Hit the start button and off we go! D-for drive. Step on it. The engine is a tad vocal but it delivers. And the little 870 kg Mirage goes like a weasel.

The Mirage is a very small car and ridiculously easy to thread through urban traffic and park in tight spaces.  U-turns a piece of cake thanks to the super-tight 4.4 meter turning radius.

On the Pattaya-Bangkok motorway a cruising speed of 120 kph or less is enough. There are speed cameras. Be aware!

The Mitsu Mirage is not a highway cruiser, but for the 160 km Bangkok-Pattaya run it works.

If you#8217;re looking for an affordable price, high fuel efficiency, and easy-to-drive everyday city car, do consider the Mirage Eco-compact hatch back.

For the Bloom Edition two paint jobs are available. To make a statement, the Blossom Purple is priced at 549,000 baht, and the more discreet White Pearl at 554,000 baht.
