The next big thing

Start of product offensive in Japan First new car for MMC since May 2003 Japan-only product MMC’s trump card in the compact segment

Extended body Rounded styling

Increased cargo volume Clever features

Fulfilling its promise of a new product offensive on the Japanese domestic market, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) unveils today the new 2005 Colt Plus compact wagon.

Designed and built specifically for Japan (right hand drive / gasoline engines / 2WD and 4WD), Colt Plus is the first new car to be launched by MMC since May 2003, when Grandis was unveiled. With this launch, MMC also resumes its advertising activities in Japan – suspended on a voluntary basis after the announcements of last Spring henceforth, presenting its new Brand attitude to potential Japanese customers. It is planned to add 2,000 units to MMC’s sales every month.

Sharing the same 2,500 mm wheelbase as the Colt sold in Japan since November 2002 (99,789 units sold by the end of September 2004), it features an extended rear overhang (+ 300 mm) aimed at increasing the cargo volume (5 passengers: Colt Plus 364 l vs. Japanese Colt 225 l).

More conservative than the Colt, its rounded tailgate sports the same triangular indentation at the bottom of the backlight as seen in Grandis. A roof spoiler and horizontal V-shaped rear combination lamps add to its personality, just as its wide air-intake and redesigned front grille.

Mitsubishi Colt Plus

Colt Plus will bring awareness and visibility in a highly competitive market. It will also allow MMC to offer a fresh product a notch above the competition in the compact segment, in terms of interior volume. To that effect, it will offer clever features like a power-operated tailgate, one-step folding rear seats* and a height-adjustable cargo floor.

Currently, MMC has no plan to offer Colt Plus in Europe.

In this perspective, the upcoming coupé-like 3-door Colt CZ3 and Colt CZT designed in Europe for Europe and to be sold exclusively in Europe will add a more appropriate buzz to the Mitsubishi Motors brand in a European context.

And there’s quite a buzz already – the new Colt’s positive reception from the European market has been confirmed with two awards to date: ‘Car of the Year in Denmark 2005’ and ‘Compact Car of the Year 2004’ in Holland. Selected by the Danish Automotive Journalists Club and by Kampioen ANWB, the magazine for the Dutch automotive association.

Launched in successive waves since May 2004 in Europe, the NedCar-built Colt has reached 9,000 customers so far (end September 2004). Volume is currently ramping up, with the strategic Diesel and 1.1 engines launched in July. Furthermore, sales in the UK, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe (20% of the Colt 5 door volume) followed Western Europe in September, whereas the Colt CZ3 and Colt CZT (40 % of the overall Colt volume) will be launched during the first quarter of 2005.

* One-step folding seats: the rear seatbacks fold down at the pull of a lever located inside the luggage compartment, next to the fifth door. Replacing the traditional folding tumbling found in hatchbacks and station wagons, this feature proves convenient when loading bulky items for instance.
